After releasing his previous album, in 2023, on March 14th, Hozier announced a new EP with four songs that didn't finish in time for release. Unheard came out on March 22nd and is an amazing project featuring the fan-favorite Too Sweet from TikTok.
1. Too Sweet
2. Wildflower and Barley(ft. Allison Russell)
3. Empire Now
4. Fare Well

Too Sweet
And what makes it so good
Released as the opening track to Unheard, the song was first teased on TikTok on March 14th, to which fans began building hype for its release. The song’s hype was for good reason, as the song has an amazing blend of musical talent staples to the style of Hozier and incredible lyricism to give this song the boost it needed to become the best track on the project. With the lyrics theme’s of gluttony and “outward ascent” as described by himself, the song talks about the dynamic parts of a relationship and the effect they have on each other. Whereas he likes the natural raw feeling of all of the things he likes to indulge in, like his whiskey being neat and his coffee black because of how sweet she is. Hozier’s vocal range within the track is absolutely stunning and gives such a nice touch to an already beautiful song. All of these factors come together to make this song the best on the entire EP.
Empire Now
And what it lacks
After phenomenal tracks like Too Sweet and Wildflower and Barley, it’s very hard to be in a place to live up to those standards. This song fails in comparison with the others, not because its a bad song, but because it isn’t better than the other three tracks ahead of it because of how good they are. The signature sound of Hozier in the song is evident and help sell this song for the great song it is. While the vocals on this song are outstanding as always from any Hozier song, however, when in comparison to the other songs the tone can seem very static and unchanging throughout the song. The lyricism’s heavily inspired words from Dante’s Inferno, the same as the entire previous album of Unreal Unearth, help the narrative of the song but to me seem less impactful as the other songs on the EP.
Final Rating
Released as a new EP on March 22nd of 2024, Hozier dropped Unheard. The tracks were in the past supposed to be on the album Unreal Unearth in 2023 but “could not make the original release” and thus were released on the EP. As the fourth EP released by Hozier, he nails yet another release with all four songs being very good addition to his catalog of amazing songs since his start in music in 2013
