If I Go, I’m Goin
And what makes it the best
As far as amazing folk albums go, This Empty Northern Hemisphere is definitely in the upper echelon. If I Go, I’m Goin manages an amazing feat by being the best on the album. The song's slowly strummed guitar helps with the somber tone of the vocals done by Gregory Alan Isakov and Brandi Charli. The lyricism about the sadness that slowly drives someone mad after losing a wife or husband is beautifully written with the repeated chorus phrase of “I will go if you ask me to, I will stay if you dare” which sells this even more as the singer is unsure of what to do in these new unfamiliar situations. Whether or not you’ve ever experienced loss, it is not necessary to understand the grief portrayed in this song with how easy it is to sympathize as the vocal lines are done so impeccably the emotion shines through the barrier of unreliability. The listener is also immediately drawn to the closer and closer to the melody that is done so wonderfully, which is why I think it’s the best bar none.
That Moon Song
And what makes it the worst
When juxtaposed with the emotional hitter that is If I Go, I’m Goin any song would have a hard time being in comparison. Unfortunately, that's where That Moon Song ends up being in because of the similar type of feelings and the sadness of heartbreak they both try to display. While the first talks about the loss and grief of a person, the ladder talks about a broken relationship. While nowhere near a bad song, That Moon Song fails the execution of being emotionally as sound as If I Go, I’m Goin because of the lack of substance that surrounds the amazing vocals. With lyrics of red tail lights disappearing into the night and the moon watching over it all, sometimes they fail to convey that sense of sadness as well as many other songs on the album. This doesn’t help the song's case because since it seems less emotional and somewhat blander in lyricism than most other of his great songs many people may turn to other songs to find what they’re looking for.
Final Rating
The third album by Gregory Alan Isakov, This Empty Northern Hemisphere, was released in 2009 and was amazingly successful. The sixth track took his fans in a chokehold as it became his #1 most streamed song on Spotify to this day. The album is an amazing folk album that is a staple to his discography and one of the best of this era of folk music. In all, it's a phenomenal album with very little to no bad songs on the album.
