Fishnets
And what makes it the best
When deciding on the best song on an album, certain criteria have to be met for me, from how the song sounds melodically and the vocal delivery to the depth of the lyricism. Fishnets does a good job at being the best in all of the categories, which leads it to being the best on the album. The vocal tone of Sam Canty really helps the song overall, especially with how great it fits with the guitars on the track. The guitars also drive the country rock song as they do an amazing job of backing the track's vibe the band was going for. The lyrics describe someone who works the corner and how she does it to earn some cash she desperately needs. The song goes further into her character, talking about how she hates doing it, that it's the worst part of the job, and how she desperately wishes she didn’t have to do what she does. The song tells an amazing story within the span of three and a half minutes, which is a truly amazing feat when handling a topic like the one they did.
I’m The Worst
And what makes it just okay
Finding a song that's the worst song on any given album or EP or that is great usually comes down to what's the more unfinished song. For this case scenario, that song is I’m The Worst. The song finds itself as the worst because of that feeling; the song is just the most unpolished of the amazing songs on the album. The vocals are used to great effect, and the instrumentation is phenomenal, like every song on the album. The issue for this song specifically and where it really shows how it lacks is from a lyrical standpoint. The song is just about how bad of a person an individual is and describes all the issues that they have with them. These issues are most of the lyrics and without any change throughout the song aside from the chorus saying “It’s easy to say I’m the worst”. The lyrics are just a little generic in comparison to the other tracks on the album, which makes them stand out as bland. The song itself isn’t bad; it's just the most generic. Truly, I’m The Worst is actually the worst on the album.
Final Rating
Following the success of their first album, No Vacancy, Treaty Oak Revival released a great follow-up with this project. When released last November, many people might have missed it, but people didn't feel in love the album, with some fan favorites being See You In Court and Close Encounters. Overall, the album is a great country rock album that has some killer vocals on some great-written songs.
