↑What Is Philosophical Dialogue?
This short video introduces the practice of thinking together through questions and conversation.
You do not need any special knowledge or expertise in philosophy. Instead, you are invited to begin with your own experiences, ask questions, listen carefully to others, and explore ideas together.
There is no need to find the “right answer.” What matters is encountering perspectives different from our own, allowing our own thinking to be challenged, and discovering new ways of seeing and understanding.
You may speak, or simply listen.
You do not have to agree with others, but we ask that you do not dismiss or reject what they say.
Keep asking questions.
Sometimes, by thinking together with others, we may notice something that we could not have seen on our own.
**What do you think?**
We invite you to begin the conversation with that simple question.
Tomisaka Christian Center has reached its 50th anniversary since beginning its journey in 1976. Over the past half-century, through prayer and dialogue, we have sought to engage with the challenges of our times, walking together with “spirituality” and “social ethics” as two guiding pillars. Behind this journey has been an ecumenical spirit of solidarity that transcends national and denominational boundaries, as well as a shared desire to uphold human dignity and pursue justice.
In a time when division and exclusion are deepening, we are once again called to ask ourselves: How shall we pray, and how shall we practice justice among people? This gathering is an opportunity both to look back on the journey we have taken and to look ahead together to the journey that lies before us. Through prayer, learning, and dialogue, we hope to discern together the next steps on a new journey.

How is Christianity, whose shape is being profoundly transformed by global shifts, being challenged today?
Through the issues of division within the churches, sexuality, and power, we will explore the challenges facing Christianity today, as well as the possibilities that lie ahead.
Sawako Fujiwara serves as Secretary of the National Christian Council of Japan (NCC) and as Chair of the NCC Working Group on Gender Justice. Her recent publication is A History of the Contemporary Ecumenical Movement: Interpreting It from the Perspective of Gender Justice (Shinkyo Shuppansha, 2024).
As part of the gathering, we will have a session of Philosophical Dialogue, a practice of thinking together through questions and conversation.
Philosophical Dialogue does not require specialized knowledge or a particular position. Instead, participants draw on their own experiences as they ask questions, think together, speak, and listen to one another. The aim is not to arrive at a single “right answer,” but to explore questions together and discover new ways of seeing and understanding.
In our dialogue, we will keep in mind the following:
You may say whatever you wish.
We do not reject or dismiss what others say.
You are welcome simply to listen.
Keep asking questions.
In a space like this, we can encounter perspectives different from our own, take those differences seriously, and remain open to new understandings.
We hope this time of dialogue will offer an opportunity to reflect together on our experiences, our communities, and the world in which we live.
May this small step continue to bring people together and serve as a place of dialogue and solidarity in the years ahead.
