I have taught/ am teaching this year the following courses:
The course, which I teach in 2023-2024, offers an analysis of key issues in the development of the domestic, foreign and security policies of East European countries. The course covers the various factors shaping the domestic, foreign and security policy of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, as well as countries in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Baltic states. It will explore both the domestic aspects of politics, political regime and protest; and foreign policy and security issues, such as national liberation struggles, geopolitical orientations, membership in regional organizations and alliances. It will also discuss Russia's war against Ukraine and Ukraine’s popular movements and mobilization against Russia’s aggression.
The course covers the various factors shaping Soviet, post-communist Russian and Eurasian foreign and security policy. It explores both the traditional foreign policy and security issues, such as the arms race and Détente, the role of the military, economic power projection, as well as new soft power and security factors shaping policy, such as transnational civil society, sub-national regionalization, transnational ethnic and cultural networks, migration, the role of ideas, norms and norm entrepreneurs.
The course covers the various factors shaping Russian foreign and security policy. It explores both the traditional foreign policy and security issues, such as Russia’s recent military build-up, economic power projection, the geopolitics of oil and gas, as well as soft power and soft security aspects of Russia’s foreign policy, including the role of the media and propaganda; hybrid warfare; the role of ideas and norms; it also explores the historical legacies influencing how Russia sees the world and its neighbours.
Methods in International Relations Research (IR501).
The main objective of this course is to familiarise students with the principal approaches to contemporary research in International Relations and to help students identify the appropriate methodology for their project. The workshop includes research labs that address questions of research design.
