Tomáš Cirhan is an Assistant Professor at the Department of International Relations and European Studies at the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University in Brno. Formerly he was a Post-doctoral Researcher at the Institute of Political Studies at Charles University in Prague. He acquired a PhD from Leiden University (Leiden, Netherlands). After graduating at Business Academy and Language school in Jihlava in the Czech Republic, he relocated to Scotland, where he received an HNC in Social Sciences at Banff and Buchan College (Fraserburgh, United Kingdom). He completed his university education at the University of Aberdeen (Aberdeen, United Kingdom), from which he graduated with commendation in September 2013 with an MSc in Globalization. He holds an BA (Hons) in Applied Social Sciences from Robert Gordon University (Aberdeen, United Kingdom).
His research interests lie primarily in the cross-national comparative analysis of new political parties and their party organization, as well as populism, anti-establishment sentiments and polarization. His authored and co-authored articles were repeatedly published in East European Politics or Czech Journal of Political Science, as well as in Political Studies Review, in German Journal of Comparative Politics or The International Journal of Cultural Policy. He has contributed co-authored chapter about party leaders in Central and Eastern Europe published by Palgrave Macmillan. His recent co-authored chapter about fragmentation of Czech party system was published by Oxford University Press. He also published a monograph titled Party Organization and Electoral Success of New Anti-establishment Parties at Routledge. He receveid the best paper award presented in the Central and East European Politics group's section at the 2025 ECPR General Conference. He is also a regular reviewer for academic journals like Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Parties, East European Politics and Societies, Politics and Governance, Czech Journal of Political Science, Acta Politologica or Acta Universitatis Carolinae – Studia Territorialia.
