The result is "The Ragged Jagged Way Back Home," an album of nine new songs being released at 3:33 p.m. Wednesday. Music fans can stream it at that time on SteelBridgeRadio.com, the online radio station with mAcdonald as creative director, or download the album or pick up CDs at the Holiday Music Motel.

It's mAcdonald's first album since his cancer battle, of course, but it's also his first of new, original material since two albums with partner melaniejane under the name Purgatory Hill in 2009 and 2012 and the first under his own name since "Troubadour of Stomp" in 2007. It's also the first time he's recorded and engineered himself for an album.

"It kinda relaxed me, felt like what music was supposed to do to me," he said. "Eventually, I slowly started getting back into the guitar ... You can tell I'm getting better at playing as the album goes along."

"I wanted to record ('A Haunting Guitar') as I was writing it," mAcdonald said. "Pretty soon, I had a recording. I decided then I would not stop, I would record and write (the rest of the album) the same way ... I didn't take a break between songs. Just finished one song, moved on to the next."

What came out is a short (about 27 minutes) album with mostly vocals and sparse instrumentation that mAcdonald said plays like it has a Side A and Side B. The first five songs use his brother's guitar and have a softer sound, while a couple songs among the rest use a high-strung Epiphone guitar that creates what mAcdonald calls a "shimmery" sound. ff782bc1db
