History & Future
The Citiwalk was part of the 1980s "SeaGate" redevelopment project in downtown Toledo.
1982 - The first parts of the Citiwalk opened along with the newly-built One Seagate office tower.
1984 - Portside Festival Marketplace, developed by the Rouse Company, opened, connected to the Citiwalk via escalators.
1985 - the Riverfront Hotel* (aka Two Seagate) was completed.
1986 - Another office tower, Four Seagate, was completed, including two new Citiwalk extensions and a TARTA bus station.
1987 - Seagate Convention Centre opened at the south end of the Citiwalk. The Park Inn by Radisson, Hotel Seagate, and Port Lawrence Parking Garage are connected via the Citiwalk to the convention center.
1990 - Portside Festival Marketplace closed.
1997 - COSI (Center of Science & Industry) Toledo opened in the former Portside Marketplace building. This COSI was originally a sister property to the Columbus science center of the same name, but they split in the 2000s.
2006 - Owens-Illinois moved their headquarters out of One Seagate, and many of the Citiwalk's shops closed.
2007 - COSI Toledo closed December 31st.
2008 - One Seagate and the nearby Citiwalk section were renovated. The Riverfront Hotel* becomes a Crowne Plaza.
2009 - Lucas County Arena (later renamed Huntington Center) opened near Seagate Convention Centre. A restricted access entrance is added to the Citiwalk.
2009 - the Imagination Station science center opened in the former COSI space.
2011 - The Crowne Plaza became the Plaza Hotel Downtown Toledo.
2017 - the Plaza Hotel was renovated and reopened as a Renaissance hotel.
2019 - The Green concourse was closed to the public south of the Imagination Station entrance due to construction.
2019 - the Orange Concourse between the Imagination Station and Four Seagate garage was demolished. The scenic elevator in front of the Imagination Station was removed.
2020 - The Park Inn by Radisson hotel closed in April, and the southernmost Citiwalk segment was rendered disused.
2020 - the Imagination Station's new IMAX theater expansion is expected to be completed by summer, but will probably be delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. It likely will include a new entrance to the Citiwalk.
2020 - A series of five murals was painted throughout the underground segment, revealed in September.
2021 - The long-abandoned Hotel Seagate building will be demolished. Previous plans to redevelop the building into a Hyatt hotel have been cancelled due to structural problems.
2022 - Scheduled completion of the renovation of the Seagate Convention Centre. ProMedica has purchased the naming rights to the center.
2022 - The former Park Inn is planned to be converted to a dual-brand Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites by Hilton hotel, which will likely bring the reopening of the southernmost Citiwalk segment.
