Before I had children, I worked as a structural engineer and enjoyed designing industrial structures. My favorite part was designing foundations. I was so fascinated by the modesty and strength of a structure which was holding all the load, without being seen or admired!
I started thinking about a career as an early childhood educator when my twin sons started preschool. While volunteering in my sons’ preschool class, I did see how the foundations of their lives were being built in their tiny preschool class, under the supervision of a few adults. I wanted those adults to have all the passion, love and knowledge they could for their job. That is why I decided to be one of them. I went back to college, earned a masters in Early Childhood Education from Fitchburg State University. I am a certified Lead Preschool teacher, Director 2 and have an MA Education Licence to teach pre-k through second grade students in public schools.
For me, early childhood education is the foundation of life. I see all the problems of the world connected somehow to a poor early childhood education. I believe early childhood educators are supposed to help young children to understand and value diversity, to listen, to use words describing what they need instead of using violence, to think and work together to solve problems and to be respectful. Wouldn’t we have a more peaceful world if all the leaders of the world could learn what should be taught in preschool?
I want to create an environment for the children and adults to feel safe and supported for doing anything in their power to create a better world. I want to build a foundation for a better future!
I work with children between the ages of 2 and 5. I am concerned about the age that most parents rush their children to learn academically and forget about the importance of learning social skills that children will need to use in every challenge that comes on their way through their lives. This is also the age that children can find the necessity and joy of learning academic skills through guided play times. Most of my research and experience as an early childhood educator have been with this age group.
I live in Townsend, MA with my wonderfully kind husband, Michael, and our little tortoise, Lucy, who pretends to be our little girl. We all are trying to get used to living without our wonderful twins who just left us to start college in Boston.
