All students, parents, coaches, and spectators should be able to attend events and experience competitions to the fullest extent. We are advocating for elevator access at all event arenas, ramps into bleachers at all events OR seating with team at all events, and wheel-chair friendly pit spacing at all events. These are easily implementable during the planning stage, especially choosing arenas with such measures already in place.
It should not be a requirement to hear or to be able to see to engage in FIRST events. Therefore, we are advocating for closed captioning on all videos, and of all commentary at all events, and audio-books for all game manuals and other pertinent texts. The programs exist to implement this easily, the only barrier is cost to FIRST.
Regardless of whether or not a person is on the Spectrum or not, a quiet place to de-stress, and recenter oneself is a necessary addition to all FIRST events. We are advocating for a room, staffed by a volunteer, with a no-talking atmosphere and de-stressing activities available for everyone at every FIRST event.
As a group we are always looking for more ways to better the FIRST Program, and to find new ways to advocate for accessibility for everyone. If you have an idea, submit it to us here.
