Toby Wagstaff is a writer, editor, and script consultant whose career spans entertainment, screenwriting, and conversational artificial intelligence. Raised in the United Kingdom, he developed an early passion for language, storytelling, and critical thinking. These interests led him to the University of Oxford, where he earned a first-class honors degree in Philosophy and Modern Languages, specializing in Italian. His academic training combined analytical rigor with creative expression, laying the groundwork for a career that would move fluidly between film, literature, and emerging technology.
Toby expanded his cultural and artistic perspective during a year of study in Rome as part of his Oxford degree program. While attending the Università degli Studi Roma Tre, he completed coursework in cinema history and art history, deepening his understanding of visual storytelling and European culture. Beyond academics, he volunteered as a teaching assistant in the English department and directed Italian students in a production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. During this period, he also worked as an English tutor and pursued photography, documenting Rome’s architecture, streets, and historical landmarks.
Toby began his professional journey in London after graduating from Oxford. He joined Studio 8 Productions and Peace Arch Films, where he worked on script coverage, screenplay analysis, and promotional materials for international film markets. His responsibilities also included coordinating travel arrangements and ADR sessions for overseas talent. Around the same time, he gained valuable post-production experience through work on the BBC television series Monarch of the Glen. Exposure to editing, sound mixing, and color correction provided him with a deeper understanding of how stories evolve from script to screen.
Toby received his first significant hands-on production experience in 2004 while working on the feature film Shadows in the Sun, starring Harvey Keitel, Joshua Jackson, and Claire Forlani. Filmed in Tuscany and London, the project allowed him to take on a variety of responsibilities. He served as an assistant to the producers, acted as a translator between the Italian crew and English-speaking production staff, and occasionally worked as an on-screen double for one of the lead actors. The experience strengthened his appreciation for collaboration and the practical realities of filmmaking.
Toby Wagstaff relocated to Los Angeles later in 2004 to become a Creative Executive at Fierce Entertainment. In this role, he participated in every stage of development for the company’s first in-house feature production, War, starring Jet Li and Jason Statham. He contributed to script development, production planning, and the project’s eventual theatrical release. At the same time, he helped expand the company’s buyer representation division, significantly increasing its client base and strengthening relationships with international distributors.
Toby eventually shifted his focus toward writing and editing by joining the boutique literary management company Original Content. There, he worked closely with emerging screenwriters, helping them develop scripts, refine pitches, and navigate the marketplace. His efforts contributed to substantial growth in the agency’s active client roster. During this period, he also supervised the editing of the Ugandan hip-hop documentary Diamonds in the Rough. He directed the recording of its narration, earning an associate producer credit for his contributions.
Toby transitioned into full-time screenwriting after years of developing both his own projects and those of other writers. His first breakthrough came when his action-science-fiction screenplay Arena was optioned by Summit Entertainment in 2008. He subsequently became represented by major agencies including Endeavor, WME, and Verve TLA. Over the following years, he sold pitches, secured writing assignments, and developed projects across multiple genres. His original works include The Day I Die, Break My Bones, and Powerhouse, while assignment projects have included Shrapnel, There Goes the Bride, and High Heels and Horseshoes.
Toby broadened his professional focus following the Writers Guild of America strike in 2023. Drawing on years of storytelling and editorial experience, he began working with conversational AI systems, contributing writing, editing, and training expertise for large language models. While he maintains that human creativity remains irreplaceable in artistic storytelling, he views AI as a powerful tool for improving access to knowledge and information. He is especially interested in the technology’s potential to support innovation in climate science, sustainability, and other global challenges.
Toby Wagstaff maintains a wide range of interests outside his professional life. Music has been a lifelong passion, and he has written, recorded, and performed both rock and electronic music as a guitarist and bassist. He is also an accomplished photographer who enjoys documenting natural landscapes and urban environments with a 35mm SLR camera. A former top-ranked youth fencer in the United Kingdom, he represented Oxford University in competition. Whether exploring national parks, city streets, or creative projects, he continues to pursue experiences that inspire curiosity, craftsmanship, and storytelling.
