Research

Most of my current research in philosophy of science and metaphysics of science centres on three interconnected fields: causation (and its cognates), laws of nature and composition. I am also interested in the ontology of engineering and the nature of scientific enquiry as it compares to technology. Questions which keep me up at night include,

  • Is mechanistic constitution just a causal relation?

  • Are laws of nature fundamental?

  • Could some determinables be more fundamental than their determinates?

  • Should we be realist about the elements of Finite Element Analysis?

  • What causal assumptions underly Fault Tree Analysis?

  • Are scientific theories a technology?
