What Are The Requirements To Become a CRNA?
The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists lists three requirements for admission to a training program in nurse anesthesia. These are:
You must be licensed as a Registered Nursing Assistant (RN) in at minimum one state.
You will need to complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN), or any other relevant baccalaureate degree.
You must have at least one year of experience working in acute care as a RN.
The Board of Nursing (BON), which governs licensure for RNs, determines what requirements you must meet. These requirements include successful completion of a approved nursing program and passing the NCLEX RN exam. Many states require that criminal backgrounds be investigated.
After completion, the nursing program can award either an Associate's (or Bachelor's) degree. Before you apply for a nursing school, confirm that the school is licensed in your state. If you want to become a Certified Nurse Anesthetist, or another Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), it is a good idea to attend a program accredited academically and accredited by a regional accrediting organization. This will give you maximum flexibility if you have to transfer to another school, or when you choose a graduate degree program office based anesthesia.
All of the nurse anesthesia training schools accept the BSN degree. Some schools will accept other baccalaureate degrees. However, these are typically limited to biology and basic sciences. You will need to complete additional classes if you have a degree other than a BSN. These will usually include science classes beyond the introductory levels and an associated lab component. These classes include anatomy and physiology as well as chemistry, biology, biochemistry, and microbiology.
After you have finished your nursing degree, passed NCLEX-RN exams, and become licensed as an RN you will need at minimum one year experience in an acute care setting. Acute care is usually any of the intensive-care units. These include medical, neurologic, and surgical intensive care units. These areas give you the opportunity to get experience with critical patients, vasoactive medications, mechanical ventilation, and other invasive monitoring devices. Your advanced skills and training in acute care will allow you to become a critical care nursing nurse (CCRN). You will be required to work in a general nurse unit in order to gain experience before you are allowed to work in more intensive care.
These are the requirements for applying to nurse anesthesia training programs. Each of the over 100 currently accredited programs has additional requirements. For more information, please contact the schools to which you intend to apply. Set up a plan that meets these requirements, and a timetable to complete them.
You can translate the CRNA school application process to many APRN programs. The first step is to determine what certification requirements the agency requires and then get a list indicating schools that offer the education required. Contact the school to learn more about their requirements and what steps you must take. It is important to assess where you are at the moment in fulfilling these requirements. Then, set goals to reach these requirements.
Don't let a goal go unfulfilled without a time limit. Instead, get busy and do something. In the next articles, I will talk about how to laser focus your application. This will help you increase your chances to succeed in your journey to become a CRNA or other ARNP.
