I am Professor of Philosophy at College of Charleston. I am also an affiliate member of the Department of Psychology and a roster faculty member in the Neuroscience Program. My main areas of research are the philosophy of mind (especially free will), moral psychology, and applied ethics (especially the philosophy of punishment). I have published in philosophy journals (e.g., Analysis, Erkenntnis, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research), cognitive science journals (e.g., Cognition, Cognitive Science, Consciousness and Cognition), and psychology journals (e.g., The Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, The Journal of Positive Psychology, Self & Identity).Â
I have also edited several volumes: Moral Psychology: Classical and Contemporary Readings (Wiley-Blackwell, 2010, with Eddy Nahmias and Shaun Nichols); The Future of Punishment (Oxford University Press, 2013); Neurointerventions and the Law: Regulating Human Mental Capacity (Oxford University Press, 2020, with Nicole Vincent and Allan McCay); and Advances in Experimental Philosophy of Free Will and Responsibility (Bloomsbury Academic, 2022, with Andrew Monroe).
Finally, I am a longstanding proponent of online philosophy. In the past, I ran two blogs: Experimental Philosophy (2004-2017) and Flickers of Freedom (2010-2017). I also co-organized the first two online philosophy conferences: OPC 1 (2006) and OPC 2 (2007), and I more recently launched the Agency and Responsibility Research Group which has already hosted talks by John Martin Fischer, Christian List, Derk Pereboom, Manuel Vargas, Chandra Sripada, David Shoemaker, Carolina Sartorio, and others. Most recently I have organized the First Gathering of Moral Psychologists (Spring 2023) and The Second Gathering of Moral Psychologists (Fall 2025) for the Moral Psychology Research Group. The recordings from the First Gathering can be found here. The recordings for the Second Gathering will be available soon.
