Hiram College is pleased to announce the first certificate program at the graduate level in trauma-informed education. Offered fully online, the new certificate is designed to support professionals working in education and education-related environments in meeting the needs of children and adolescents who have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and trauma.

Given that the COVID-19 pandemic is now considered collective trauma, the need for knowledge, strategies, and resources to help students ranging from kindergarten through grade 12 is even more critical. The new certificate program will provide educators and other professionals with the skills to implement best practices and to promote a safe learning environment for all students, especially those who have experienced trauma.

The certificate program is comprised of four courses, including Basics of Childhood Trauma; Childhood Trauma: Brain Development; Relationships and Resilience; and Trauma-Responsive: Managing Behaviors for a total of 12 graduate semester hours. Courses are offered online in an asynchronous and 8-week format, and they may be taken individually without enrolling in the certificate program.

The first student has completed the University of Nevada, Reno's Nuclear Packaging Graduate Certificate program, the only such program in the nation. Daniel Perlstein, an employee of the Nevada National Security Site, completed the Mechanical Engineering Department's specialized education program that began in 2015.

"Daniel, a mechanical engineering graduate from UNLV, was one of our first students," Professor Miles Greiner, chair of the University's Mechanical Engineering Department and director of the Nuclear Packaging program, said. "The Nevada National Security Site needed packaging engineers, which are in very short supply. They felt the best way to be successful was to hire Daniel and train him to be a packaging engineer. His managers were familiar with our program."

Perlstein graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in spring 2015, and finished the certificate program in a little less than a year, continuing to work as well as traveling to the National Lab sites where most of the classes are offered. He works in the Security Site's Infrastructure Management and Modernization Directorate, and is continuing his career there.

"The certificate program was extremely helpful and provided me with a variety of information, tools and contacts needed to help guide me through my career as a nuclear packaging engineer," Perlstein said. "I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to participate in the program. If it wasn't for the nuclear packaging program, it would have taken at least four or more years to gain the same amount of experience in the field."

Nuclear Packaging important to Department of Energy

Greiner developed the new accredited graduate-level nuclear packaging program and its curriculum with assistance from Yung Liu of Argonne National Laboratory, and with Jim Shuler, manager of the Packaging Certification Program for the U.S. Department of Energy, which funded the development of the program.

The certificate program has a nine-credit curriculum, which includes three required courses of essential material, and six credits of electives for depth and breadth. The combination of classes is offered at the University of Nevada, Reno as well as at the three partners National Laboratories Argonne, Lawrence Livermore and Savannah River.

"Most of the students in the program are established employees in the industry or at National Labs, a few are University students," Greiner said. "There are many students in all of the certificate courses, but they are on other degree trajectories rather than the certificate."

The certificate program provides graduate-level educational training to both financial and mental health professionals who want to improve clients' financial health by integrating relational, behavioral, cognitive and emotional elements with personal finance, according to Kristy Archuleta, associate professor and licensed marriage and family therapist who has spent her career bridging financial planning and marriage and family therapy to form financial therapy.

"The certificate will equip financial and mental health professionals with knowledge and skills to help clients increase their overall well-being and meet their personal goals, especially as they relate to money. Understanding how to integrate financial therapy principles and practices into their current profession is essential to increasing the financial well-being and financial goals, which consequently will increase overall well-being," Archuleta said.

The personal financial planning program in the College of Human Ecology's School of Family Studies and Human Services also offers an undergraduate degree, a personal financial planning graduate certificate, an online master's degree and a hybrid doctoral program where students take online classes during the fall and spring semesters and participate in an intensive 10-day summer experience on campus and internationally.

Before the pandemic, the intent was for students to do an in-person, eight-hour data hackathon in the sixth week of each class, which would substitute for the traditional final exam given for most courses. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the first cohort did those hackathons virtually with the intent to start in-person events this fall, Apigian said.

Launched in 2022, the post-graduate certificate program prepares K-14 instructors to integrate data science in classrooms to equip students to meet the growing demand for experts in this field amidst the digital transformation of industry. The first cohort includes nine faculty and staff members from Jones College in Ellisville.

Graduate students are considered full-time if they are enrolled in at least 9 graduate credits per semester or hold a full-time assistantship (total 20 hours a week) and are enrolled in at least 6 graduate credits per semester. Graduate students are considered half-time if they are enrolled in at least 4.5 graduate credits per semester.

To be considered as full-time under the aforementioned clauses, a student must complete and submit the appropriate forms to the Office of the University Registrar prior to the first day of classes for the semester. Different requirements for full-time and half-time status may apply for tuition, verification, loan deferral, and financial aid. Contact Student Accounts, the Office of the University Registrar, and Student Financial Aid, respectively, for more information. Note that the official designation of time status for all students is determined by the Office of the University Registrar.

When a student is admitted to graduate study, the student is assigned a faculty advisor by the academic program responsible for the student's program of study. Registration for newly admitted graduate students, as well as continuing students, begins with a visit to the student's academic advisor. There, the student can obtain information about specific courses and degree requirements and develop an individual program of study. Progress in an approved program of study is the shared responsibility of the student and the advisor. The graduate student is responsible for compliance with the policies and procedures of the college, school, or institute, and all applicable departmental requirements that govern the individual program of study. Students should consult with their advisors before registration each semester.

Students may pursue graduate study in non-degree status at Mason. Such students who wish to pursue a degree or certificate program are encouraged to apply for admission to a degree or certificate program at Mason as soon as possible. All program admission requirements must be met, including official transcripts, letters of recommendation and standardized test scores, if applicable. If the student intends to use credits earned in a non-degree status at Mason toward a degree or certificate, the credits must be approved on the appropriate form. The credits must have been earned within six years prior to first enrollment as an admitted student in the specific degree or certificate program, and a minimum grade of B (3.00) must have been earned in each course. A maximum of 12 non-degree credits taken at Mason can be applied toward a degree or certificate program. No credits can be applied to more than two certificates and/or degrees.

Permission to re-enroll in a program must be obtained by all graduate certificate, master's and doctoral degree students who have failed to enroll in at least 1 credit of coursework for two or more consecutive semesters at Mason. A program may allow a student to petition to graduate under any catalog in effect while the student was enrolled. All program components, including concentrations, must appear in the catalog for the year selected. The final decision as to catalog year rests with the unit dean or director. The Graduate Re-enrollment form is available here.

This policy applies to all graduate students regardless of gender identity, marital status, and whether or not the student is the birth parent or non-birth parent. The approved PLoA time period must be taken in its entirety as one event. The student may schedule the approved PLoA to begin up to six months after the anticipated birth/adoption/placement of the child. A PLoA can only be used once per child. Simultaneous births or placements are treated as one event. The use of this policy does not impact the availability of a non-academic withdrawal outside of the PLoA period, and it may be considered in any future PLoA or time limit to degree completion policy exception requests and appeals.

Faculty, student applicants, and staff are encouraged to work together in order to facilitate the PLoA process and ensure students return to their same time to degree completion status as before the PLoA. Any student on a PLoA may be required by the local academic unit or College/School to advise them of their return prior to their first semester or 8-week session back as an enrolled student. Any PLoA student who fails to return and register in a timely manner by the add/drop deadline in the semester or 8-week session after a PLoA shall still have their time limit to degree resume and will be required to re-enroll in their graduate program upon their return. ff782bc1db
