What does a school counselor do?

School counselors wear many hats! But our main priority is focused around ensuring students are supported in the areas of academics, social-emotional well-being and personal development. Counselors collaborate with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and community agencies, in order to better serve our students. As counselors, we aim to identify and meet the needs of ALL students, as well as, minimize any potential barriers that stand in the way of student success.

The role of a school counselor includes:

  • Help students work through concerns about themselves, their families, their friends, or school

  • Provide community referrals

  • Facilitate a system of student supports for the students; involving teachers, principals, families, and communities

  • Serve on the SST team and 504 plan team

  • Fostering self-awareness, acceptance and diversity

  • Teaching time management and organizational skills

  • Peer relationships

  • Promote a safe and inclusive school environment

  • Serve as an advocate for students and families

  • Promote mental and physical well-being
