Mental Health Training

Learning as an adult can be a challenge regardless of your age, level of skill or previous learning history. Working with adult learners means being able to recognize where and when someone may need a little extra help. While LBS tutors are not mental health professionals, you can still provide a range of supports to learners without going beyond your scope as a literacy tutor. TLG created a website to help you become more comfortable with this part of your tutoring role.

Jennifer from Project READ Literacy Network, and author of Yes I Can: A Mental Health Guide for Adult Literacy Facilitators, discusses a range of mental health considerations for LBS Tutors including:

  • Motivation Strategies

  • Recognizing Mental Health Problems

  • Crisis Intervention

This resource includes:

  • 11 tutorial videos

  • 16 tip sheets that you can download and work on with your learner

  • A list of community mental wellness resources

  • Access to Yes I Can: A Mental Health Guide for Adult Literacy Facilitators
