About Me

I was born in Singapore in 1967, had my early education in Permaisura Primary School, Raffles Institution and Raffles Junior College, and then obtained my B.Eng. (Electrical) from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1992 with first-class honours. I then went to the University of Cambridge under a Cambridge Commonwealth Trust scholarship, and completed the Ph.D. in late 1995 with a thesis on acoustic echo cancellation using adaptive filters, supervised by Dr. Malcolm Macleod. From 1995 to 2000, I was a member of technical staff at the Centre for Wireless Communications in Singapore, which has since been merged into the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R). From December 2000 to May 2011, I was a faculty member at the University of Toronto's Edward S. Rogers Sr. Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering. From June 2011 to January 2020, I was a professor at the ECE department of NUS, where I served as Vice Dean of Graduate Programmes in the Faculty of Engineering from September 2015 to December 2019 and as Deputy Head of the ECE Department for Research and Graduate Programmes from July 2014 to August 2015. Since mid-January 2020, I have been serving as Deputy Dean and Associate Dean (Education) at the Faculty of Engineering in the University of Sydney in Australia.

My research interests have evolved over the last 20 years from adaptive signal processing in my PhD years, to multi-user detection and CDMA transceiver design in my CWC years, to MIMO processing, cooperative diversity, phase, frequency and channel estimation in multi-carrier modulation, spectrum sensing for cognitive radio, and wireless resource allocation in my U of T years. Since joining NUS in mid-2011, I have worked on green communications, smart grid and heterogeneous networks, satellite communications, and network architecture and cyber-security in the Internet of Things.

I have served in various capacities in the international research community, including being Associate Editor at IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE Signal Processing Letters, IEEE Wireless Communications Letters and Wiley Journal of Emerging Telecommunications Technologies in the past. Since September 2013, I have served as an Area Editor at the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. I serve regularly on the technical program committees and organizing committees of international conferences such as IEEE Globecom, IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) and IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC). I am a TPC co-chair for IEEE Globecom 2017 to be held in Singapore in December 2017, and was the TPC co-chair for the Singapore-based conference IEEE International Conference on Communication Systems (ICCS) in 2000, 2012, 2014 and 2016, the TPC co-chair for the PHY Track at IEEE WCNC 2014 (Istanbul), and TPC co-chair for IEEE International Conference on Communications in China (ICCC) 2014 (Shanghai). Going back further, I was also TPC co-chair for the SPC symposium in IEEE ICC 2010 (Cape Town) and local arrangements co-chair for IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT) 2008 (Toronto).

I was the chair of the IEEE Comsoc Singapore Chapter in 2017 and 2018, and have previously served as Secretary and Exco member. I was a Senior Member of IEEE from 2002 to 2016, and a Fellow of IEEE from 2017 onwards.
