Sri Veeratteswarar Temple, Thirukovilur

Sri Veeratteswarar Temple is situated in Kizhaiyur. Buses are available to this place. Before the main terminal of the bus stand, there is a stop, the (Govt. Hospital). One can take a share auto rickshaw from there or just walk from there (it would take just 5 minutes). The temple has been sung in praise by several Nayanmars. There is Lord Shiva (Sri Veeratteswarar) and his Parivarangals in this temple. This is one of the Veeratanams.

Legends say that from here, poet Avvayaar was taken to the Himalayas by Periya Pillayar. Avvayaar wrote the famous "Vinayagar Agavel" from here. In this temple, the Goddess Durgai Amman is having white eyes. Near the temple, there is a Samadhi of Meyporul Nayanaar. Sri Vinayaka in the temple is praised as Lord Periyanai Ganapath

The eight Veeratta Stalams are Tiruvatikai, Tirukkurukkai, Tirukkadavur, Tiruvazhuvur, Tirukkovalur, Tiruppariyalur, Tirukkandiyur and Tiruvirkudi. Tiruvazhuvur is considered to be a Tevara Vaippustalam, as it has no Patikams dedicated to it. Thiruganasambhandar and Appar had sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple Lord Shanmuga.
