I was lucky to grow up in the tropics and be impacted by colour and

heat, shape and smell. Then I had to deal with the contrast and

constraint when I returned to England. Some would say I am a

'boarding school survivor'. After training in complementary

medicine, I found I was uneasy with touch; so I

confronted my anxieties, which were also yearnings, by

training as a masseur. This in turn put me on the spot regarding

intimacy which remained challenging for me into middle age. Part of

the solution was to make myself draw from life until I overcame

the fear of looking and the fear of my desires. The rest of the solution

was largely allowing myself to enjoy as much sensual, intimate contact

in whatever circumstances as I felt like:

That, and not caring what anybody might think about me.

It is a process of exploration that continues and I like to think will

always be a part of my life
