Who is Tim Beaty?
Tim is a longtime resident of the Lynhaven neighborhood of Alexandria, a parent of adult children, and a community organizer, with first-hand knowledge of ACPS students, staff, and families, and a good understanding of the issues in K-12 education in Alexandria and in our peer divisions.
Tim is in our schools
Tim works as a substitute teacher in Alexandria and tutors at an afterschool program in Arlandria. He also speaks Spanish and has spent extensive time in Mexico, Central America, and South America.
"I bring a love and admiration for the students, teachers and support staff I've been working with. And, I have direct knowledge of the challenges that our schools and students face, as well as insight on what’s working well."
Tim supports our school staff
Tim knows that ACPS teachers, principals, maintenance folks, cafeteria workers, bus drivers and other staff are working hard every day to support students. He believes they deserve to have a competitive salary and positive working conditions.
"If we get a good collective bargaining agreement, we’re likely to keep our best employees and attract new ones. I’ll be an advocate for that. It’s what I’ve been doing for the last 40 years in my professional life, so I think I could assist in making that happen."
Tim shares our concerns
Tim's priorities include:
Students’ mental health
Academic achievement
Supporting teachers
Union Recognition and Collective Bargaining for employees
Addressing the bus driver shortage
Building bridges with the Latino Community
"I would like to hear directly from students about their biggest safety concerns and what ideas they have to improve the school climate. It’s important to hear from students on this issue. And School Board members need to be accountable to the people that then elect them. I do think that school board members need to have the freedom to be able to get out and communicate with the voters that elected them."
Tim has experience to lead
Tim retired two years ago as the global strategies director for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. He’s got an economics degree from the University of Notre Dame, is the father of three grown children and says the school system can benefit from his decades of experience. Tim's wife is an educator in a neighboring division, so he understands the issues facing K-12 education in Northern Virginia.
"I also have professional experience with collective bargaining, which I know the school division is undertaking at this time. Also, my degree is in economics; I understand budgets and know the challenges of working in large institutions."
