FEEDBACK ON TEACHING
Feedback from Students
“Tiffany Doan is an effective lecturer, cares for her students, and is highly approachable. Even though she is a PhD student, she is more engaging, concise, and informative lecturer than most professors I know. She was also really friendly and relatable, which made classes more fun. I liked the small class size and format of the course consisting of lectures, discussions, and (theoretically) presentations. I particularly enjoyed the creativity/autonomy granted to us throughout the course -- in discussion leaders, paper presentation, and even the final project. This motivated me to not just complete them but also try something experimental.”
“Very energetic, happy, down-to-earth, kind, considerate, always available to answer questions and happy to assist in any way she could. An incredibly hard-working woman who really enjoys teaching. Tiffany embodies what I expect from an instructor.”
“This was by far the most challenging semester for me as I was struggling with personal issues. Tiffany was very supportive throughout the semester and she always checked in on me. I have never met a prof or a person at this school with so much care for someone that they do not know. Tiffany is truly a great person.”
“Tiffany is the sort of person UW should try its best to hold on to - its a very rare personality which is almost non-existent in the math faculty. She really knows her material and treats everyone like a peer - but she is stern when she needs to be. She is always happy and eager to help people.”
“Tiffany did an amazing job teaching this course! She integrated multiple ways of learning into each lecture to keep us engaged and interested. I also enjoyed the way she posted lecture slides after class, that way i was able to take notes and not get lazy. The grade breakdown was really fair compared to some other psych courses as well.”
“- Tiffany is a great lecturer! she knows a lot about the subject but explains it in a way that's straight forward and easy to understand
- she gives clear instructions and has the student's best interest at heart so that if you do your work you can succeed in her class (no curve balls)”
Feedback from Centre for Teaching Excellence
“Tiffany, the way in which you alternated between very short mini-lectures and discussions (both peer-to-peer and instructor-mediated) really helped solidify the main concepts in your learners’ minds. You designed your lesson in such a way that each research design was briefly defined, before opening up the floor for a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the given design. Allowing for frequent, short discussions on each design, as opposed to discussing all three designs at the end, helped keep learner engagement high and allowed for immediate consolidation of ideas. Complementing this, you concluded the body of your lesson with a peer-to-peer discussion about which research design was most appropriate for tracking how a child’s understanding of ‘happiness’ changes between the ages of 2 and 6. This evaluative activity required recall of all three experimental designs, which provided further reinforcement of your earlier topics. To cap it all off, you posed an impressive number of post-assessment questions, asking your learners to identify which experimental design was being used in a variety of different scenarios.”
“Tiffany, you seemed very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the topic. You were also passionate in teaching it. You provided real-life examples which made your lesson immediately relatable and interesting; this is an excellent teaching tool. You have a well-placed and well-utilized, natural humor that peeks through in your delivery style, and this was wonderful to see. There was an easy charm in these moments all throughout your lesson, and it won us over. You got us very interested and involved in your wonderful and very well-prepared lesson.”
“Tiffany, you opened the lesson with a very good hook/ bridge-in where you showed a video to your learners and kept referring to this video throughout the lesson. I really liked the way you laid out your learning outcomes following this. This was very concise and helped your participants in understanding your topic clearly. You also revisited these outcomes at the end which was very helpful. I also really liked your use of different modes of teaching, i.e., the whiteboard, presentation slides, videos. This helps diverse learners in understanding the content.”
