Dato' Keramat Pasar Residence
Urban Regeneration of Pasar into a Mixed-use Development with Housing as Catalyst of Regeneration and Sociability
Pasar Datuk Keramat is important in cultural significance and is appreciated by community interactions as a spirit of Kampung neighbourhood. However, there are concerns on hygiene andwaste management when left undeveloped with a lack of planning efforts. As such, urban regeneration approach is essential for the pasar to keep up with the city’s modernisation. Simultaneously, the increasing migration trend of M40 young adults into Kampung Datuk Keramat has created the need for mixed-use development due to land scarcity. Moreover, inadequate future mixed-use development which separates housing and pasar has threatened its sense of identity. In the advanced level architectural design studio of Design Pre-Thesis 2 focusing on the Urbanism theme of ‘EQ-Urban’, this study explores the potential of mixed-use developments to address these needs while fostering community interaction. It analyses the urban migration trend and homeownerships of M40 young adults, cultural significance of Pasar Datuk Keramat, and proposes design strategies to foster community interactions through urban regenerative approach.
