An intercultural night is an event designed to bring people from different cultural backgrounds together to share their traditions, experiences, and customs. This celebration offers participants an enriching opportunity to discover new cultures, sample diverse dishes, and embrace the beauty of global diversity. The evening typically includes activities such as food stalls, cultural performances, language exchanges, and cultural presentations, each providing insight into the unique elements that define various cultures. The benefits of attending an intercultural night extend far beyond entertainment. It offers the chance to expand one’s knowledge of different cultures, customs, and perspectives. Participants can form connections with people from diverse backgrounds, fostering a spirit of understanding and inclusion. Moreover, these events help promote mutual respect, breaking down stereotypes, and celebrating the richness of cultural diversity.
During our youth exchange program in Belgium, an intercultural night was held to showcase the rich culture of Turkey. The event highlighted Turkey’s diverse cuisine, traditional dances, and cultural practices. Attendees were treated to famous Turkish snacks such as Turkish delights, pistachios, roasted chickpeas, and halva. These were only a glimpse of Turkish cuisine, which also includes dishes like kebabs, baklava, and lahmacun. The night featured traditional Turkish folk music and a lively performance of the halay dance, which continued subsequent days. The Turkish group also shared cultural superstitions, including the belief in the protective power of the evil eye, gifting each participant with an evil eye bead. The night concluded with a reenactment of a traditional Turkish henna night, during which henna was applied to everyone’s hands, creating a joyful and memorable experience.
The Albanian group also made a strong cultural impression during the exchange by sharing Albania’s rich heritage through traditional food and captivating dance performances. A standout moment was the presentation of homemade rakia, a potent and beloved Albanian spirit symbolizing the country’s hospitality. They also brought homemade jams, kurabia (a traditional cookie), and kulaç (a special celebratory bread), each representing Albania’s deep connection to agriculture and tradition. The Albanian team provided a historical overview of their country, shedding light on Albania’s past, cultural resilience, and enduring customs. The night truly came alive with their energetic traditional dances, offering the audience a vibrant glimpse into Albanian culture.
The German group also participated with enthusiasm, using the event to showcase their own culture while experiencing the traditions of others. They shared Apfelschorle, a refreshing and less-sweet drink often enjoyed for its refreshing and less-sweet flavor compared to pure juice or soda that is popular in Germany, alongside Kuchen (cake), which holds an important place in the tradition of Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake gatherings). Additionally, they offered toffee and snack mixes, representing a broad range of German treats. To make the event interactive, the German group hosted a trivia game on mobile devices, allowing participants to learn about Germany in a fun and engaging way. This intercultural night celebrated the diversity and richness of multiple cultures. Through food, dance, and interactive activities, participants not only gained insights into new traditions but also built lasting connections, promoting unity and fostering a deeper understanding of different cultures.
