Volcanoes, rivers, beaches, oh my!
Costa Rica's lush and tropical landscape makes it a desirable getaway for any adventure lover or jungle relaxer. Native Costa Ricans, known as Ticos, are friendly and excited to welcome others to their beautiful country. Although small, this Central American country is home to a rich culture and unique stories that have been passed down through time. The country lies between Nicaragua and Panama, and features Pacific and Caribbean coastlines. There are eight remaining indigenous tribes in Costa Rica, and they are spread throughout the region. Some speak the native Spanish, while others continue to use and preserve their own languages. Ticos place a large importance on family relationships, peaceful existence with others, and protecting nature. In Costa Rica, there is no established military. Instead, Ticos prioritize free higher education for every citizen and contributing to sustainability efforts to protect the environment. This storybook is meant to show the beauty of Costa Rica, while telling interesting and unique stories that emphasize Costa Rican culture.
In this storybook, you will read about La Llorona, a mythical woman you've likely heard of before. Although often cited as a Mexican myth, various Latin American cultures have taken the story of the "weeping woman" and translated it to tell scary versions of their own.
Another creature that lurks at night is El Cadejos, a wolf-like creature whose origins are more varied. In some cultures, this creature acts as a friendly, yet stern, guide to ensure the safety of citizens. In other tellings, the wolf is a policer, a dark figure that one does not want to run into alone. You know he is around by the sound of his chains dragging behind him.
In a less menacing turn of events, the story of the Turrialba volcano (pictured above) will be told. This is the story of star-crossed lovers who find solace and love in nature. This truly local Costa Rican legend gives the account of how the massive Turrialba volcano came to be.
