Tian Gao is a Staff Research Scientist in the IBM Research AI department, located at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, NY, USA. He received his B.S. (magna cum laude) and Ph.D. degrees, both from the Department of Electrical, Computer, and System Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in 2009 and 2016, respectively.
Tian's research lies in the area of machine learning, AI, and statistics, with focuses on graphical models, causal discovery, and inference, and with a broad interest and experience in Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing, for which he has regularly serves as a program committee member or reviewer in leading AI/ML conferences and journals.
Tian was a co-author on the Best Student Paper Award at 2021 ACM Conference on Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, and Health Informatics (ACM-BCB), and the Best Paper Award at 2019 EMNLP Workshop on Machine Reading for Question Answering. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Triple-Helix Fellowship and the Rensselaer Medal. He is a member of IEEE, AAAI, Tau Beta Pi, and Eta Kappa Nu.
