Ciruit Plan
Stick Fairy Lights on cloth.
Sow LED lights on cloth with conductive thread.
Test Lights.
Draw stars on front of the cloth
Test lights from the front
When a hand come closer to the sensor, the lights come on. The closer the hand gets, the more lights come on. It's difficult to hear in the clips but it also plays Twinkle Little Stars louder the closer the hand gets
In this design challenge, I found myself practicing more self-regulated learning compared to the Marshmallow Challenge and the Distance Sensor Challenge. Initially, I planned to create a flower that grows as the hand moves closer to the sensor, using conductive thread. However, I realised I wouldn’t have enough pins to connect all the LEDs I wanted. Instead of getting stuck, I pivoted to using fairy lights and transitioned to a twinkling star design. By starting small and testing the conductive thread and lights with a coin battery before integrating them into the CPX, I saved time troubleshooting and avoided larger debugging issues later on.
Having multiple perspectives in class pushed me to think outside the box and take on a more ambitious project. Seeing the creative solutions from my peers motivated me to challenge myself, leading to a design that was both innovative and feasible. This experience reinforced the importance of adaptability, problem-solving, and incremental testing in the design process.
Looking ahead to my final project in this class, I feel both inspired and intimidated. Seeing past projects that have stood the test of time makes me want to create something equally memorable, something that future iDesign students will look at years from now. At the same time, I worry that I do not have the design skills to pull off such a project. However, reflecting on the topics we have explored, such as self-efficacy, mindset, and self-regulation, this challenge is an opportunity to push myself beyond what I think I am capable of.
One of my first steps will be brainstorming a project incorporating various skills and materials in the Fimbel Lab. I have always wanted to try woodworking, so I plan to integrate that element into my final piece, possibly exploring furniture design. To navigate this learning curve, I plan to lean on the TAs more, as I have realised how much support and expertise they can provide. While I am anxious about executing my vision, I am also excited to see what I can create.
