Welcome to 3rd grade!
Dear Parents,
Welcome to another school year! My name is Mrs. Long and I will be your child’s teacher. We are going to have an awesome third grade year together. I have included in this letter a few items that I hope will make returning to class run smoothly. If you have any immediate concerns please contact me by calling the school office, send a message on Class Dojo, or an email to longn@cajonvalley.net.

Or you can join by using scanning the class QR code above!
School Supplies
Each student will be provided a durable green plastic two-pocket folder for all of their school papers. This folder will go back and forth from home to school every day. Each folder is labeled: one side for papers that are to be taken home and the other side will be for papers that you are sending back for me to see. Please check this folder daily so that important papers are not lost and those that require a signature will come back quickly.
Each student will be provided a ziplock bag to keep supplies such as colored pencils, erasers, and a box of crayons. This pouch then slides into a chair pocket where we keep our journals, books, and folders. We are very limited on space- so please, remind your student to keep any extra colored pencils, crayons, or pencil boxes in their backpacks or at home. Everyone should come to class each day with their Chromebook charged, and working headphones or earbuds.
*If you would like to support our class with some “extras” we could use white cardstock paper and sharpened wood pencils (no plastic wrapping as it destroys our pencil sharpener) . If you are interested, here is a link to our wish list on Amazon.
Snacks
Our recess is at 10:00 a.m. and it is helpful if students have a small healthy snack to get them through the morning. Some suggestions for a nutritious snack are: fruit, cheese and crackers, a muffin, real fruit juice, carrots or celery sticks, a granola bar, etc. Please do not send candy, chips, soda, or sports drinks to school. We have had ant problems in the past so it would be helpful if snacks were sent in sealed bags or wrappers. Clearly label your child’s snacks with their name. Students may also bring their own water bottles to school - please make sure it is labeled with their name and has a good lid to avoid spills.
Homework
Nightly reading and practicing basic math facts is encouraged. Time to complete assignments will be given in class. There will be some days when your students may need to finish up an assignment at home, or spend a little extra time in order to make a weekly goal.
*Please look over your student’s Weekly Assignments and Goals notice each day. This paper will stay in their green folder for the week. It is a way for your student to keep track of their assignments and for you to check their progress.
School hours are 8:00am-2:00pm, minimum days on Monday 8:00am-1:00pm. Pick up will be in the circle drive in front of the school.
I am looking forward to this year as we continue to learn new things in fun and exciting ways!
Mrs. Long
Only supplies requested:
*Sharpened pencils (wood not plastic coated), and headphones or earbuds
Optional:
*Students may want to bring twistable colored pencils ( no need to sharpen- they are great!)
Hello Families- I just wanted to clarify a few things about assignments and goals:
Think Central (Math)- please ignore the due dates. If your student has anything under the "Things to Do" list- that is part of their assignment for that day and due by the next morning. The only reason that the program lists the due date a week later is that is how long the assignment is available for students to complete it. I leave it open for a week incase a student is absent and to give students time to make up the work if needed. Students usually complete a worksheet that goes with the lesson in class and then are given time to complete a trainer and a quiz in Think Central on the computer. If they run out of time- then they are to complete the trainer and quiz at home. Most students finish in class. This is not something students can begin working on ahead of time as the online practice goes with the math lesson that day. I hope this is helpful.
Next, students can begin working on goals for iReady, Read n Quiz, and Beable starting on Fridays because I am able to change the dates. I am not able to change the dates for ST math- so any work done early on ST math will not count for the next week.
Read n' Quiz: The goal for Read n' Quiz is to get students reading. The secret to becoming a better reader is to read :) I believe it is important to hold students accountable for their reading. However I also know how frustrating it can be when your student has worked so hard to finish reading a book and then they find out that there is not a quiz for it. I don't want your student to feel discouraged. In order to give them credit for that book as far as Friday Fun- please send me a message or note from home on Wednesday or Thursday so that I can make a note of it for the weekly goals.
I know the beginning of the year there is always a bit of a learning curve. However- your students are truly doing FANTASTIC!! Last week everyone made their goals! Thank you for encouraging your child to keep track of their hard work and manage their time.
8/30/23
This is our first week of keeping track of assignments and goals. ✅💻📝This class is doing amazing. Goals should be made and all assignments completed by Thursday at 3:00.⏰ It's sometimes hard at first learning this important time management skill, and keeping track of our work. However, we already have some "Early Goal Getters!" Shout out to:
🎉Zarah
🎉Nathan
🎉Lily
🎉Jacob
🎉Joury
🎉Luna
🎉Owen
🎉Chloe
*If your student is not on this list- please check with them. Ask them if they have turned in their ✅Life Skills homework on saying "Excuse Me", have them show you their ✅"Things To Do" on Think Central, and then have them show you the points they have earned on ✅Read n' Quiz under My Stuff.
I will be checking again tomorrow @ 3:00. ⏰Everyone who has made their goals and completed all assignments will get to go to Friday Fun🎉. Those who don't will be given extra time to start on their goals for the next week, or finish missing assignments.

These students spent time reading over the break!
**Please please practice those basic math facts till they are mastered "quick as a snap". Time is provided in class each day- but extra practice at home is essential. Our goal is to know all of our basic addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts before the end of the year- and it's coming up quick! ✖️✅⏰
**Please encourage your child to make it a habit to read a little each day. Students are always welcome to borrow books from our classroom library. The Ranch San Diego library has tons of great books ready to be checked out as well! 📚📖📔
3rd grade state testing is coming up soon and an easy way to prepare for this is to read nightly. 📚💻🎧
Remind your student to charge their Chromebook tonight and bring it to school tomorrow. 💻
I am looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow morning! 😊☀️⏰🌻

Tuesday will be our class Valentine Party! We have 25 students in our class. If your student would like to bring in Valentines, please make sure they bring one for each student.
Our weekly goals for next week will be less since it is a shorter week. *There is no school on Monday 2/13 for Presidents Day.

Happy New Year H-21! 🎉I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and is enjoying the break. This is a great time to learn those multiplication facts on Xtra Math✅✖️, do some reading📚, and complete the Winter Challenge❄️. Just a reminder that I will be inviting anyone who earns a certificate on Xtra Math and earns points on Read n’ Quiz to have lunch in the classroom and I will provide dessert! 🍩
As we get ready to head back to school we are in need of a few items to keep our classroom clean and comfortable. If you would like to help out we are in need of baby wipes, Mr.Clean Magic erasers, and Kleenex .🤧
We have worked hard this year and many students are in need of new crayons 🖍(no more than 24 count so that they fit in our pencils pouches and seat pockets), colored pencils, and working headphones🎧. It would be great for your student to start the new year with some new supplies if possible.
Lastly, we are in need of a new room parent as Bree Nedden (Isaiah’s mom) is moving. Thank you Bree for all of your help in starting out the year, and we wish you all the best!❤️ Bree came in the classroom faithfully on Mondays to help students with fluency. 🙋🏻 If you are interested in being our room parent (helping coordinate and contacting volunteers for different events and class parties), and /or willing to come Monday mornings 8:00-8:40 to help with fluency (listening to students read)- please let me know. I would be so grateful! 😊
I am looking forward to seeing everyone and excited to continue learning in fun and exciting ways in 2023! 🎉

New this year- Family Teacher Teams! Instead of Curriculum night you are invited to school with your student! Come to H-21 with your student on Tuesday September 13th at 7:30am- 8:30am. Our students will perform a song we have been learning at 7:30 then head to breakfast while we discuss data and the importance of fluency in reading. Students will join us as we learn a game to improve our reading. You will get to go home with materials you can use with your student at home. I'm looking forward to meeting you again :)

Dear Families of H-21-
Students will get a weekly goals and assignments sheet like this each week to keep in their green go home folder. It should stay in the folder and come to school each day. Students will keep track of their work throughout the week by writing down their scores and progress. Since it comes home each day, you can check your student’s progress as well! Remind them to write down their scores for iReady reading and iReady math, scores for Beable, mark an X when Xtra Math is done for the day, write down the number of puzzles completed on ST, and points earned in Read n’ Quiz :) I will collect it on Friday mornings. I will also post a link to the weekly goals on Google Classroom and on Class Dojo in case your student is absent or it gets lost.
***TIP: Students are able to get a head start on Beable and Read n’ Quiz starting Fridays. I am able to change the date range for those two programs so that if students want to start working on goals for the next week, they can start on Friday or even do a little reading over the weekend if they choose to. It will make reaching other weekly goals easier!
Students who make all of their goals by Thursday at 3:00pm will be invited to “Friday Fun”. Students who do not make their goals or have incomplete assignments will sit out of Friday Fun to complete work.
*Keep in mind that this is our first week of goals and assignments. We are still learning all of the different programs. This week we are focusing on making our goals for Xtra Math, and Read n' Quiz. If students log onto Xtra Math each day and earn 1 point on Read'n Quiz they will earn Friday Fun. I also like to reward those who made the "most" points, puzzles, etc. on Friday.
Thank you for your support from home!

Due to some technical difficulties I am unable to check student assignments and goals. I am hoping the issue can be resolved before class tomorrow to see who our "early goal getters" are. The good news is this gives students more time to complete their assignments and make their goals to become an early goal getter! I'll keep you posted. Thank you for your patience ❤️
Today our class had our last library day with Mrs. Wade. She is retiring! The class made cards for her thanking her for making our library time so special as well as drawing pictures of some of our favorite book characters that she has introduced to us over the years. She will be missed! 📚😊

Remember to bring a water bottle labeled with your name- it's going to be a hot week. Please pack a healthy snack to enjoy at snack recess. Don't forget tomorrow is a minimum day😊 See you tomorrow!
Hello H-21! I hope everyone is enjoying the break! 🌻I hope you also have had a chance to read some good books📚, try out the Beable challenge💻, and maybe even work on mastering those multiplication facts through Xtra Math➕✖️. Our goal is to have our multiplication facts mastered before the end of the year to help prepare us for 4th grade- which will be here before we know it! 🍎☀️
Remember any work you do over the break on Read N' Quiz or Beable will count towards the weekly goals for the first week that we are back. ✅✅
Students who earn 3 points or more on Read n' Quiz, or pass a level on Xtra Math (for the first time) will be invited to join me for lunch, and I will provide dessert! 🍪Enjoy your the rest of your break- I look forward to seeing you on Monday 😊

*Our chapter 6 math test will be next week on Thursday. It's so important that students know their multiplication and division facts- keep practicing on Xtra Math.
*We will be starting the iReady Diagnostic next week. Please encourage your student to get a good night of sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and take their time to do their best! *There will be no iReady goals for the next 2 weeks as we work on the diagnostic.
*Library books are due next week. 📚
Welcome Back and Happy New Year!
1/8/22
Just a couple reminders as we head back to school on Tuesday:
*On Monday, you are welcome to pick up a free Covid test for your student. More information has been sent out in Student Square on this.
*Make sure your student has a fully charged Chromebook on Tuesday.
*Headphones- does you students have working headphones they can use in class when needed?
*Bring a healthy snack to enjoy at recess (no cookies, candy, or sugary drinks please), along with a water bottle, and a clean mask.
*Extra: Our crayons and colored pencils are not in the greatest shape this time of the year. Sometimes it's nice for students to have their own new boxes of crayons and colored pencils that they can keep in their backpacks (we don't have room in our chair pockets).
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone, hearing about winter break, starting a novel together, beginning our unit on division, learning new games for PE, and continuing our study on California Native Americans. It's going to be great!
I can't wait to see everyone at school tomorrow! Just a reminder to charge your Chromebooks💻, bring a water bottle💦 with your name on it, a healthy snack 🍌🍎(no candy) and don't forget to bring your green folder.📁
🎉👏🏼Shout out to these students who did some reading and practiced Xtra Math facts over the break:
