To look for the good in others and in all of creation is an early lesson for all Dominicans flowing from scriptures and the example of St. Dominic. This lesson was taken to heart by the three Conway Sisters from Allegan who all became Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids. This was evident in their joyful spirit and in the countless ways they loved the people they encountered in life.

Downstairs, the 3,000-square-foot home has a grand foyer, a large tea room, a private tea room, a room for the baby grand piano, kitchen and pantry. The sisters decorated with pictures from their homes and collected tea cups and dishes from yard and estate sales.

I had the joy of doing ministry at St. Adalbert Catholic School in South Bend, Indiana, where I helped with religion classes in Spanish and English. I confess that the children taught me more than I taught them! I also had the joy of going to Utah, where I did ministry at Holy Cross Ministries and Peace House. In each ministry I discovered that learning requires patience and humility. These are qualities that the experiences have transformed within me.

After professing vows, I returned to Monterrey, Mexico, to live in a community with three sisters. Some of my ministries are to accompany and help immigrants in two refugee shelters. One of the things I do is talk to people and use my artistic skills as I invite them to draw or paint their hopes, joys or sorrows, similar to art therapy.

I also work in Family Rosary, which is under Holy Cross Family Ministries. In this ministry, I listen and I help the team in their work of evangelization. What I enjoy the most is visiting parishes to promote the devotion of praying the rosary with families.

The pandemic has been a challenge because I had to stop serving the refugees and the people in Family Rosary. The first days were very hard. I felt that I was being very selfish to think about myself and my needs. I felt that I had abandoned my brothers and sisters in need. Many times I thought there was no point in being a religious sister if I was not at the service of others. I did not profess vows to abandon them, but I made my vows to walk and inspire God's people to continue loving and believing.

The ministry experiences that I had during my novitiate have helped me to not give up, to find new ways to do things, and to deepen my faith. I learned a lot about myself, about my faith, the Church, the Congregation, spirituality and diversity.

Sister Fidelity Grace is one of three Catholic Studies graduates who entered the Sisters of Life in the same month and year (September 2015) and professed final vows Aug. 5. The others are Sister Zlie Maria Louis, who was raised in Waterloo, Iowa, and Sister Ann Immacule of Sacred Heart in Owatonna. As Sisters of Life, they are consecrated for the protection and enhancement of the sacredness of human life.

Plaques in memory of the three sisters are displayed in Nicaragua at Casa Santa Ins in Managua and Ojo de Agua, the site of the ambush. Two additional plaques for the three sisters are displayed in Founders Hall at St. Agnes Convent and at Nazareth Court, both in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

The three sisters who were arrested Sunday were led away from the military base in hand cuffs and later shackled and forced to spend the night in the Muscogee County Jail. They were arraigned Monday in U.S. Federal Court in Columbus. They appeared before U.S. Magistrate G. Mallon Faircloth, who is the same judge who sentenced Sister Kathleen to prison.

She started her ministry as an educator in Michigan. After years of teaching and serving as a principal, she was asked to come to North Carolina for the first time in 1976. For three years, Sister Marge served in teen and young adult ministry at both Blessed Sacrament Parish and Elon College.

From Burlington, she was called to be a province leader for the south and west territories. Officially, she and the other leaders were stationed in Memphis, Tennessee, but since their job was to visit 140 sisters in 28 states, their real office was a van.

Now, in what she considers to be the culmination of her experiences and journeys, Sister Marge serves primarily as a spiritual director. She describes spiritual direction as a ministry of listening, discernment and prayer in a confidential setting of encouragement and compassion.

What she remembers most was how the sisters who ran the [then] all-women college lived a philosophy that God is good. For her, it stood out because she grew up in an atmosphere where the core belief was that God is judge.

In 1957, at age 20, she entered the convent on campus. She considered majoring in business with a music minor, but one of the sisters recommended that she switch to biology and math because teachers were needed. She obliged.

One thing the congregation might not know about me is that besides being a priest, I also have a certificate in spiritual direction. I offer spiritual direction to people who need someone to share the movement of the Spirit in their life, or what God is calling them to do. Within this ministry, most of the time the response is in sharing the story. When we tell a story out loud and feel heard, then it might make more sense to us.

I usually tell people being a sister is like being in the military, because you do not choose where you want to go. I was in Boston and already registered to study holistic psychology, and two weeks before school began, the Sister Superior sent me here to work at Trinity. I have been working here since September 1, 2008. So far, I enjoy the people and the ministry here, which have strengthened my faith, challenged it, and also helped me grow.

Sr. Bernardetta Boggian and Fr. Mario Pulcini, regional superior of the Xaverian Fathers, found the bodies that evening, September 7, 2014. If a protocol exists for such a horror, the distraught missionaries followed it, calling the police, notifying the motherhouse in Italy, and communicating with officials who quickly came to the scene of the crime. Pulcini then urged the other sisters, who numbered five that night, not to sleep in their convent; but the women thought such caution excessive given the abundance of police on patrol outside the compound.

Later that morning, upon seeing the long line of women religious who came from all over Bujumbura to console the community, one of the Xaverian sisters, who had lived through the night's ordeal, broke down. "Oh sisters," she wailed. "How can we continue to live in this morgue?"

Srs. Raschietti, Pulici and Boggian were the first Xaverian sisters to be killed. Their murders remain unsolved. An initial push for an independent investigation receded amid turmoil over Nkurunziza's controversial pursuit of a third term in office. The political crisis has left hundreds of Burundians dead over the past 16 months, and sent tens of thousands fleeing across the border.

"Bernardetta was a sister's sister," Xaverian Sr. Laura Canali said. "She was not a very educated person. She did not do a lot of study, but I felt her always present." It was Bernardetta who helped nurture a missionary project in Sierra Leone, and who reassured her fretting Italian sisters, accustomed to doing the cooking, that catered food would be good enough for the hundreds of friends and family members attending the community's 50th anniversary.

The Xaverian sisters left their South Kivu missions reluctantly. They wanted to stay "for the love of the people. If you leave, there is no hope," Canali said. The order's constitution invites women "to set a tent" among a people and share their joys and suffering. Raschietti, Pulici and Boggian had set theirs firmly in Central Africa.

In the international press, early accounts suggested the nuns were victims of a robbery, or killed by abusive husbands in Kamenge, upset because the nuns had assisted their wives. Nothing was stolen from the convent, and it seemed improbable that outraged husbands would kill the neighborhood's cherished, elderly sisters, because Burundian culture is devout, and women and men religious are highly regarded.

Within 40 hours of the sisters' deaths, authorities arrested a handful of impoverished Kamenge males, detaining some, releasing others. They ultimately presented 31-year-old Christian Butoyi, a mentally handicapped man, whom neighbors described as "a fool," as the primary perpetrator. Police said Butoyi was upset because the nuns had built their convent on his ancestral land.

Within three weeks of Rugurika's arrest, the European Parliament passed a resolution calling for his release while Burundian authorities were still investigating the women's deaths and for "an independent international inquiry on the murder of the three nuns."

"The three sisters were killed for their simple services in a parish where they were known and respected for their warm humanity," the statement said. "The hope is that this, along with the truth of their death, can be known."

Yet like the sisters, Pulcini, never considered leaving Burundi. The very suggestion evoked a hearty laugh. "We are like Africans!" he said. "How many times have their neighborhoods been destroyed, burned, and rebuilt? And this is what we learn from them, to never be discouraged.
