What is a Community School?
The community school strategy transforms a school into a place where educators, local community members, families, and students work together to strengthen conditions for student learning and healthy development. We partner with local businesses, organizations and agencies to organize in-and out-of-school resources, supports, and opportunities so that our students and families can thrive. We serve as a hub that brings families, communities, and partners together to remove barriers to learning and strengthen connections to generate improved student outcomes.
COMMUNITY SCHOOL COORDINATOR
Karen Coles, BSW, MHRD
The Community School Coordinator (CSC) serves as a leader and liaison within a community school. The CSC works collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders, including school leadership, school staff, students, families, community members, community partners, and others to:
Assess the needs of school's students, families, and community
Foster and coordinate a variety of partnerships
Provide essential wraparound services to students and their families
Commit to equitable educational opportunities for all
This is the first year that Thomas Stone High School will be a community school and my fourth year of being a Community School Coordinator. I am looking forward to meeting students, families and community members to implement this strategy by prioritizing the needs and wellbeing of students and families that are critical and urgent. This site will be updated frequently with resource information, current events and activities. Please contact Karen Coles if you have any questions or are in need of services. I look forward to working together!
