In a stunning move, Pittsburgh and New Jersey agreed on Dec. 7 to a monumental six-player deal.
New Jersey acquires: Kaden Lebsack, Yamamoto Yoshiyuki
Pittsburgh acquires: Stefano Ghisolfi, Aidan Wood, Yuko Mizuno '03, Cameron Baumgartner
New Jersey is in win-now mode with this acquisition. The Generals (10—8) are stuck just on the precipice of being in-or-out. They're currently out, but with a lot of the season left to play, New Jersey decided to go bold. They're giving up a haul, too. Wood and Ghisolfi both averaged over 11 points per game last season en route to 18th and 24th in individual points come season's end. Mizuno '03 also offers a solid female placing on Stage One, as she currently sits fourth in female points at 5.38 points per game (behind Atlanta's Jordan Carr, Minnesota's Allyssa Beird and Vancouver's Olivia Lopez).
And Baumgartner is the true example of a plug-and-play. While he hasn't been in every game, he's scored just under eight points per game in his appearances and has been a solid starter for just about every team he's played for. Though he's by no means the most important player in the deal, he's no slouch either.
New Jersey is banking on Kaden Lebsack's sustained excellence — the American has yet to finish outside the top 15 and has finished on the All-TNL First Team five times — and for Yamamoto Yoshiyuki to get out of his slump. Yoshiyuki, who was the TNL Most Valuable Player just last season, has gotten off to a catastrophic start in Season Seven. The reigning MVP has been anything but one this season, scoring over double digits just six times. Yoshiyuki currently sits 48th in the MVP rankings, a figure that is massively overblown due to a 49-point bomb in which he won the "Gauntlet" extra round. Without that bomb, he would be sitting in 91st place. For New Jersey to get anything out of this trade, Yoshiyuki will need to return to at least All-TNL prominence in the next 13 rounds. If not, this could be a long slog and potentially doom the Generals.
Ghisolfi goes rock climbing.
New Jersey (10–8) has had a solid start to the season, but it hasn't been smooth sailing. Most of New Jersey's losses have came to quality teams, such as No. 8 Denver, No. 2 Tampa Bay, No. 13 Dallas. Other losses have been embarrassing, including losses to No. 24 Miami and No. 29 Sacramento. This Generals team has been all over the place and it reflects as such in their record.
The Iron (9–9) are coming off a three-game winning streak, but this team has been anything but winning for the majority of the season. If not for the "Safety Pass" rule, there's a genuine chance this team could be 0—6 to begin the season. Though their consistency has improved, it's by no means solved, and is a lot of the reason why the Iron are making this deal.
Both teams still have questions to answer even after the trade and it remains to be seen if it'll pay off for either team.
Round 19 will take place on Dec. 10 on SHIRO 22.
