Thomas Hughes is a sophomore at Virginia Tech, majoring in multimedia journalism with a minor in creative writing.
Hughes currently serves as lead editor for Virginia Tech On SI, penning articles on football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, softball and baseball. To date, he has written over 830 articles for VT On SI and writes daily. He is also a staff writer for Steering Wheel Nation, having written pieces on several motorsport associations, including Formula 1 and the NTT IndyCar Series.
Hughes is also the assistant editor-in-chief for 3304 Sports, as well as an on-air talent. As the assistant editor, Hughes has written articles on football, men's and women's basketball, lacrosse, baseball and softball. In addition, he edits roughly ~30 pieces a month, mentoring new writers alongside the Editor-In-Chief to ensure team-wide cohesion. Hughes also participates in 3304's weekly SportsCenter-style studio show, "3304 Tipoff", as an on-air talent. In addition to his responsibilities with Virginia Tech On SI and 3304 Sports, he also serves as a writing curator for Aspiring Journalists at Virginia Tech.
Hughes is also the host of the Blacksburg Blitz podcast, the official podcast of Virginia Tech On SI.
Outside of his studies and work, Thomas competes on obstacle course racing competitions inspired by the television show "American Ninja Warrior". He qualified for the National Finals in the Ultimate Ninja Athletic Association (UNAA) in 2022 and 2024 and the World Championships of the World Ninja League in 2024. Hughes is the co-president of the Ninja Warrior Club at Virginia Tech, as well as the president of the Formula 1 Club at Virginia Tech.
Outside his extracurriculars and school activities, Thomas enjoys playing sports videogames and hanging out with his family, plus his two dogs, Apollo and Phantom.
