Computational and experimental investigation of air-stable precursors for chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of transition metal boride ceramics. These and other advanced ultra-high temperature materials are useful for extreme environments, especially for spaceflight. Fundamental understanding of CVD mechanisms is critical to development of next-generation aerospace materials.
Organometallic synthesis and photophysical investigation of organogold species for panchromatic nonlinear optics. Through experimental tuning of the ligands attached to gold (and to other metals), we can alter excited-state dynamics of novel photoluminescent complexes for a wide variety of optical applications.
Computational studies of zinc catalysts that facilitate the catalytic transformation of thermosets into covalent adaptable networks (vitrimers) through transesterification. Density functional theory (DFT) studies focus transesterification in vitrimers to explore the mechanisms of catalytic crosslink exchange and to screen for suitable catalyst candidates. This research potentially leads to more efficient, lower-cost, and more eco-friendly recycling of thermoset polymers.
