I'm Thomas Brookshaw, a recent First-class graduate from The University of Staffordshire studying Games Design and Production.
My passion lies in creating gameplay experiences that resonate with players, while exploring new mechanics and innovative ideas to create fresh and engaging gameplay. I love taking an existing design concept and testing how far I can expand it through constant iteration.
Throughout university, I have worked on projects across a range of genres, including VR, Action shooters, Multiplayer party games, Tactical turn-based games and Narrative Experiences. These projects allowed me to explore many different areas and methods of designs whilst developing a strong understands of technical implementation.
One of the highlights of my university experience was leading Cliffhangers, a collaborative project that brought together a multidisciplinary team of designers, programmers, artists and animators.
As producer and Team Lead, I coordinated the team throughout development, guiding the project's overall vision and organising weekly milestones. I was so glad to finally have the opportunity to lead a large team, something I had wanted since the beginning of my course.
Cliffhangers went on to receive an Industry Choice Award from University Partners and was nominated for five additional awards.
Since graduating, I have continued leading the project as Project Lead with a team of twelve graduates. We are current rebuilding the game from the ground up with online multiplayer and preparing it for a future Steam release.
One of my favourite aspects of my university experience, was how it allowed me to explore many different genres and learning from each project. Over the last few years I have worked on:
Alongside my university projects, I have actively looked for opportunities to learn from professionals within the games industry.
I was fortunate to receive mentorship from Dave Flynn, a UI Designer and Technical Artist at Criterion Games. His guidance throughout my final year of university helped me gain valuable insight into professional development practices, collaboration within large teams, communication of UI information and the importance of designing with the player's experience in mind.
Before pursuing game design, I was always fascinated by filmmaking and cinema. I loved the idea of writing my own original stories and visually bringing them to life.
In 2021, I completed the BFI Film Academy course hosted at Storyhouse Chester, where I worked as part of a 7 person production team to create an original short film. Through the project, I collaborated with the rest of the crew, learning the complete filmmaking process from initial planning & scriptwriting through to production and post-production. I was also part of the casting process where I interviewed real actors, judging who best suited each role, giving me first hand experience working with creative talent.
Following the BFI Film Academy, I continued my journey of filmmaking by forming my own independent team to make more short films. I gathered a team made from friends from school and hiring from real production & acting companies. Together, we produced three original short films, acting as director and writer for the projects. I wrote every screenplay myself, hired many actors and completed production through the entire development schedule.
