Ball screws can be broadly classified as Ground ball screws or Rolled ball screws. The basic difference between the two is the process by which they are manufactured. Rolled ball screws as the name suggests are created by pushing metal rods through rotating tool dies. while in a ground ball screw, the threads are fabricated by abrasives. The rods rotate at high speeds between two machining centres. Given the difference in process that great accuracy can be achieved with ground ballscrews as against rolled ballscrews. Traditionally the ground ball screws are preferred for high accuracy applications, whereas rolled ballscrews are preferred for low cost applications for automation and industrial uses.
Factory automation has seen a wide range of applications being converted to linear motion from rotary motion earlier. Disadvantages of using hydraulics and pneumatic systems has also lead to a huge growth in the industrial use of linear motion products. Ballscrews and linear guideways have helped greatly in this transformation. A ball screw assembly is unique in a lot of ways. It was first manufactured in the year 1898, by H.M.Stevenson & D. Glenn. However, since then the ball screw assembly has seen significant changes and improvements. Ball screw designs have also changed over the years. They are now far more easy to produce and provide a considerable advantage over the other technologies for converting the rotary motion to linear motion. One of the prime causes clients still use lead screws over ball screws is the cost. However, the low friction in ballscrews helps in achieve great mechanical efficiency. Normally it is 90% efficient as against a lead screw which is only 20-25% efficient in converting rotary force to linear movement. THK Ball screws are used extensively in aircraft and missiles to move control surfaces. Also an aircraft's recliner seats uses miniature ball screws from THK. In automobile electric power steering, in semiconductor industries, not to forget the extensive uses in machine tool industry, robots and precision assembly equipment. They are also common in CNC routers for metal and work working applications. Ball screw assembly consists of a threaded screw which moves the nut with minimum friction with the help of ball bearings placed along the inside of the nut. Special seals are placed on the ends for preventing the ball bearings to slip out during movement. Ball screw assembly procedure is complex & difficult to explain over some text in simple words. Ball screw backlash strictly speaking is the axial free movement of the ball screw to the ball nut. Ball screw backlash is not rotational in nature. There are special applications which require zero backlash of the ballscrew, this is an inbuilt nature of THK Ball screws. Since all THK ground ball screws have the nut preinstalled at manufacturing facility, all of them have zero backlash. Rolled ballscrews from THK have some backlash unlike the ground ball screws. This point could be important for ball screw selection for special applications.
Ball screw design or the design of the ball nut varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Most manufacturers have a in house design parameters & catalogs that are based on some key industry standards. However, since ballscrews are used in factory automation and some very special applications, often the designs are customized to need. these customization in ball screw design means that replacements are not easy to find.
