Went online to download my latest statement for my Trio Rewards credit card at Fifth Third. Much to my surprise (and mostly dismay), I discovered they lowered my credit limit from $8500 down to a measly $500.

I have never been late on a payment and always paid in full every.single.month. I called customer service and spoke to a lower level rep who couldn't really give me any information other than to say that a letter of expanation was being mailed to me.

I have worked very hard to maintain a good credit score. It's always been in the 750+ range across all boards and no baddies on my credit reports and now my scores are going to take a hit. This is a real kick in the pants for me. I guess this is the thanks I get for being a customer since 1995.

Since your reports are clean, that's bizarre if you are using it every month and there haven't been any major changes like escalating utilization elsewhere. Hope you'll keep us updated when the letter arrives.

No negatives at all. My balances run about $300-$400 on each of my cards every month so there has been no spikes in the charges. I even make payments a couple of times a month. This is so frustrating.

It's very unusual in the credit world. OP is responsibly using their credit line, using about 5% of their line each month ($400 of $8500) - this is exactly what most lenders want to see. There is no justification for reducing a credit line that close to average spend since that would keep the card at 80% utilization, a major red flag and potential scoring disaster. If lenders based all credit lines on 125% of your average monthly spend, everyone would be near maxed out and 700 would be the new 830 FICO 8 score.

All FICO Score products made available on myFICO.com include a FICO Score 8, and may include additional FICO Score versions. Your lender or insurer may use a different FICO Score than the versions you receive from myFICO, or another type of credit score altogether. Learn more

I had already applied, got approved for both Amex and Discover this month, and activated both cards. Credit Karma alerted me that Amex did a hard pull, and I cannot find pull information on Discover. Should I apply for a third card as a beginner this early to build credits? I had no loans, and my credit reports looked empty from all three credit bureaus.

That's what I was thinking as well. However, I found so much conflicting information on how many cards a beginner with no credit history should get. Some say you need at least three and apply every six months; some say the same but get them as soon as possible because they will not stack on top of each other once they become less critical and fall off the credit report. What is the truth?

Currently with no history, the banks don't have any info to go off of (ie: 35% of your score is payment history). With literally zero account reporting, besides being 30 days late on your first payment I can't see how you can drop your score further if you apply of other card. With 15% of your score is length of credit history, your average age of account is not going to drop because your current age is 0 months, on the flip if you wait until year to apply for a new card that your average age will drop from 12 months to 8 months (12+12+0= 24// 243=8).

So if you can manage one card, I don't think opening other card would kill you, BUT it is important that you don't over extended your self as amount owed makes up 30% of your score. In order to maximize this you must maintain your credit utilization under 30% of your total credit availability (in your current case, 30% of $3000 is $900). However to really optimize your score, maintain credit utilize under 10%). 152ee80cbc
