Erasmus Plus Project "Think Globally, Unite for Climate"
Meeting Dates: Monday, 18-22 December 2024
Location: Águeda, Portugal
From November 18th to 22nd, we had the opportunity to participate in the Think Globally: Unite for Climate project in Águeda, Portugal, an inspiring experience focused on sustainability, climate action, and digital innovation in education. The visit combined interactive learning, cultural exploration, and practical examples of environmental initiatives, reinforcing the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate challenges.
Our journey began with a warm welcome at the host school, where we toured the facilities and attended a presentation on ongoing sustainability projects. This introduction set the stage for the enriching experiences that followed. One of the highlights was our visit to the Águeda Smart City Lab, where we explored innovative urban solutions such as renewable energy systems, smart waste management, and sustainable mobility projects. This visit demonstrated how technology can drive sustainable urban development and provided valuable insights into how such initiatives can be adapted to different contexts.
Beyond technological solutions, the visit also emphasized the importance of natural ecosystems and traditional practices in sustainability. During a field trip to Aveiro’s dunes and estuary, we learned about coastal conservation, biodiversity protection, and climate adaptation strategies. A Moliceiro boat ride through the canals and a visit to the Aveiro salt pans offered a glimpse into eco-friendly tourism and sustainable salt farming, highlighting the delicate balance between environmental preservation and economic activity.
The final part of our visit focused on maritime heritage and its connection to climate awareness. At the Ílhavo Maritime Museum, we explored the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems and sustainable fishing practices. A stop at Costa Nova provided further insights into coastal sustainability, while a visit to the Saint André Boat and Oudinot Garden reinforced the importance of preserving maritime traditions while embracing modern environmental solutions.
The experience concluded with a diploma ceremony and farewell gathering, marking the end of an insightful and motivating exchange. This Erasmus+ visit not only enhanced our knowledge of climate-conscious urban planning, conservation, and sustainability education but also strengthened our commitment to implementing these ideas in our own communities.
By combining technology, cultural heritage, and environmental responsibility, this project showcased the power of collaboration in tackling global climate challenges. We leave Águeda inspired and equipped with new strategies to foster sustainability in education and beyond. Together, we can make a difference!
