Currently I hold the position of Chief Technology Officer in think3 and my job is to explore new directions and new technologies in the 3D CAD world. Think3 is a privately held company that operates in the CAD and PLM business. Think3 provides CAD products (ThinkDesign) in the areas of mechanical and industrial design. It also provides PLM products (ThinkPLM) to help engineering departments in managing their data and their activities. Together with off-the-shelf products think3 offers consultancy in the CAD/PLM domain and helps companies who want to move some design activities off-shore.

Many companies are outsourcing big chunks of their design activities to India and China. What is the impact of these changes on the way CAD systems are used ? How is this kind of outsourcing influencing the evolution of think3 CAD system?

Think3 indeed has a branch of its business dedicated to help companies to outsource design activities to India, where think3 has set up several design centers working on a project basis for European companies.

It must be pointed out that think3 is providing also a third modeling approach that is Global Shape Modeling (GSM). In this powerful approach the user can make editing using shape semantics like bend, twist, or even change from one section to another. This approach is much better suited for complex shapes where the face-dragging metaphor of direct editing is less appropriate. So in think3 we provide the user all the freedom and the potentiality to obtain the shape he/she has in mind.

The fundamental idea behind think3's Sheet Metal philosophy is that the user is not forced to follow a single predefined approach. In fact, it is possible to start from scratch or to start from an existing, possibly imported, model as well. In any case the user can mix these two approaches and will take advantage of the set of specific features and of an enlarged and powerful library of Sheet Metal specific Smart Objects.

The think3 application provides a set of global parameters (the Sheet Metal category of the Entity Properties) that are automatically assigned to an object when the first Sheet Metal feature is created.

Because in the think3 application it is possible to create models containing multiple solids it is mandatory that each solid has its own set of Sheet Metal parameters. Therefore, a Sheet Metal Parameters page is accessible by right-clicking on the solid icon in the Model Structure. The page is available only if the corresponding solid has at least one Sheet Metal specific feature.

You are enabled to create your own customized Sheet Metal Smart Objects. The ones shipped with think3 are just examples. You can easily use them as "templates" to create your own ones. If you right-click on a Sheet Metal Smart Object in the Smart Object palette and select Properties, in the Preview & Description tab you will find the model used to create the Smart Object. You can use the model both to see how the Smart Object was created and to create a new one by customizing it as you like.

To obtain a flat pattern drawing of the Sheet Metal part, the think3 application offers a new type of view: Flat Pattern View. This view creates a flattened drawing irrespectively of the model state (model could also be in bend state).

think3 announces the full availability of MoldDesign, a CAD solution developed for the mold making world with specific functions offering high productivity for the considerable work needed to design a plastic injection mold.

The solution does not stop at the generation of 3D models, but continues with the automatic creation of the 2D tables necessary to produce the mold. It can also be extended to include full management of documentation, revisions and generation of specifications integrating into TD PLM, think3's Product Lifecycle Management solution. This simplifies the collaboration on the mold, the maintenance of the mold and preservation and sharing of the corresponding information. 2351a5e196
