Muthu is the soundtrack album composed by A. R. Rahman for the 1995 Tamil-language film of the same name starring Rajinikanth and directed by K. S. Ravikumar. It is the first film where Rahman, Rajinikanth and Ravikumar worked together.[1][2] The album have six tracks in each with lyrics with lyrics by Vairamuthu.[3] The Hindi version is titled Muthu Maharaja and had lyrics penned by P. K. Mishra,[4] whereas the Telugu version of Muthu is penned by Bhuvana Chandra.[5] Recording of the songs took place at the composer's Panchathan Record Inn studio in Chennai. The soundtrack was released on 8 October 1995 under the Pyramid label.[3] The Telugu version of the soundtrack was released under Aditya Music and Saregama distributed the Hindi soundtrack.

Rahman composed a tune beginning with the gibberish word "kuluvalilae". When it came to writing lyrics, Vairamuthu could not find a substitute word for kuluvalilae that was equally long but made sense. He and Ravikumar wanted Rahman to change the tune slightly to accommodate a better word but realised it was not possible without disturbing the song. As a result, kuluvalilae was kept. Ravikumar recalled, "I just made it seem as though the song was set in this village called Kuluvaele [sic] and put up a road sign indicating that it was the name of the village and then had the song start with the word".[7] The background rhythm and beats of "Kuluvalilae" were borrowed from "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass.[8][9] The song includes "Omanathinkal Kidavo", a lullaby composed by Irayimman Thampi.[10]

The concept of "Oruvan Oruvan", a song reflecting philosophies relevant to society through its lyrics,[11] was inspired by "Aandavan Ulagathin Muthalali" from Thozhilali (1964). Ravikumar told Vairamuthu what he wanted the lyrics to portray.[1] The song stresses that "God is above all and that greed will be the end of life".[12] Paravai Muniyamma was originally asked to sing "Kokku Saiva Kokku", but declined,[13] and the song was instead sung by Theni Kunjarammal.[3] It is set in the Carnatic raga known as Kalyani[14] while "Vidukathaiya" is set in Chakravakam.[15][16] Recording of the songs took place at the composer's Panchathan Record Inn studio in Chennai.[3]

Padmini was cast as Mohanambal, the title character.[16] A younger artist was suggested instead of Padmini for the role, but Nagarajan refused to replace her.[17] Ganesan attended Carnatic music concerts, and consulted Carnatic musicians in preparation for his role.[18][19][20] T. S. Balaiah portrayed Muthurakku, the Thavil player. Tiruvidaimarudur Venkatesan played the instrument thavil off-screen for Balaiah.[21] Balaiah had additional training for playing the instrument.[19] Madurai T. Srinivasan played the Mridangam off-screen for the song "Maraindhirundhe Paarkum".[22]

The film received critical acclaim in India and abroad for its song and dance sequences, humour and portrayal of the prevailing socio-cultural milieu at that time.[14] The Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan carried an 11-page review of Thillana Mohanambal with a discussion among several prominent people, which included IAS officers, professors and actors who unanimously appreciated the film and the people associated with it. The review's conclusion was that the director should be given a prize for making such a film.[58] In its original review, The Hindu said the film "encompasses all the traditional wealth of the culture of [Tamil Nadu]."[3] The magazine Screen called the film "a brilliantly made entertainer".[20] Dina Thanthi wrote "Not one would not have been mesmerized by the "Thillana" dance sequence".[20]

The prints of the film in 16 mm format were acquired by the American Cultural Association for their archives to represent quintessential old-world Thanjavur culture, and by universities in the United States for the study of Bharatanatyam and Nadaswaram arts in particular.[29][73] Thillana Mohanambal is included with other Sivaji Ganesan-starrers in 8th Ulaga Adhisayam Sivaji, a compilation DVD featuring Ganesan's "iconic performances in the form of scenes, songs and stunts" which was released in May 2012.[74] Although film distributor Shanthi Chokkalingam stated in February 2012 that Thillana Mohanambal's remaining prints were "totally damaged",[75] Pradeep Sebastian of Deccan Herald stated in April 2015 that he "recently" saw the film through a restored print.[76] Jil Jil Ramamani became immensely popular;[77] in its obituary for Manorama, The Hindu noted Jil Jil Ramamani "probably bore the closest resemblance to Manorama" in terms of being able to perform Karakattam and Poikkal Kuthirai.[27]

The Kalinga Narthana thillana describes the dance of the young Krishna on the hoods of the serpent Kaliya (also called Kalinga). A thillana contains many rhythmic words and intricate sequences that are fused with repetitive musical notes. It is similar to the Hindustani tarana.
