"Well, looks like something nasty happened here" I said, observing the surrounding in front of me with a keen eye
After that recent encounter with the Ren look-alike, I was left confused as to what to do. I mean, it's not like an everyday thing that a boy suddenly come and tell you to run for your life because something is going to kill you right?
Hell, under normal circumstances I would have just left him then and there. But it's different, the boy is telling the truth, or at least what he deem as the truth, as I could see from the lack of pupil dilation in his eyes
There's also dried bloodstain on his clothe, an alarming sign all in itself
After a while of thinking, I decided to hang him on a tree so the Grimm won't reach him and go to the village myself
Since my destination is supposed to be this "Valley of the End", I might as well take a detour through the village and see what's going on there
Quest: Find out what happened in Kuriyori village
Reward: 50 EXP
What I found there was pretty much beyond my imagination
"How?"
The village of Kuroyuri was razed to the ground. Buildings collapsed between each other, their walls stained with the color of blood. Fresh blood. Human blood. A massacre had just happen here not long ago, possibly last night judging from the freshness of the marks left behind
Ugh. I could already feel my stomach churning just now
Why the hell did the system not give me [Gamer's Mind]? That stuff would have been insanely useful to me considering the kind of world I'm in now
Looking around, I could spot several corpses littered on the street. Multiple body parts, brutally butchered and left there to rot in the glistering sun. Already, flies were gathering around them, attracted to the stench of the dead
Yeah, this is definitely not a normal Grimm, or else they would only be bones left. Bandits, maybe?
I walked into one of the nearby houses, pushing aside the broken door as I did so.
"Sorry for intruding" I called out, but no one answered
My eyes roamed around the dusty space, looking for a sign of life, before they zeroed in on the corner of the room
There, laid against the blood-stained desk are two corpses hugging each other. A woman covering her child from whatever it is in front of them. Her head is split off her shoulder, while the child's skull is pierced by what seems to be a sharp object. A blade
I walked toward them, my footstep clacking in the empty room with every steps I took. The sound of blood rushing through my ears gradually become fainter as I approached them.
To be honest, I'm strangely calm at this moment. Even when I stared into their hollow eyes, all I feel is pity to these people, especially the child who have to die an early death
Perhaps I could find something useful on them?
Ding!
The sound of a window popping up interrupted my silent mood
Would you like to loot [Child's Corpse]?
[Yes]/[No]
Jesus Christ, why would you ask that?
Of course I would. The more I found, the better. These people are dead, and there's no chance that it can be an ambush from the enemy as they are burnt, thus there's no need to worry about anything
You have found [Burnt Diaper]
You have found [Chew Toy]
I threw the thing to the other side of the room in disgust
As expected, there's nothing on their body. I turned my eyes to the other corpse, at the same time another notification like the previous one popped up
Would you like to loot [Woman's Corpse]
System, you know me well
You have found [Butcher Knife]: +35 Damage
Jackpot
I eyed the item in my new hand with interest, giving it a few test swing by slicing it in the air. Heavy, but carry a good deal of damage, this will make for a good pair with my other Gyoutou knife I had
Putting the thing in my inventory, I smiled in satisfaction
"Arigato" I bowed my head to the dead bodies for the amazing weapon it had given me "And Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru"
Is that how you say "Rest In Peace" in Japanese?
Meh, whatever
Still, I didn't find anything that could point out the cause of this, apart from the fact that whatever (or whoever) was here can use a blade-type weapon. Perhaps if I could go around the village, I would be able to find something interesting?
50 minutes later
You have found [Hentai Picture]: No status effect
You have found [Broken Yari]: +2m Reach, +28 Damage
You have found [Grounded Dust Powder]: Explosion!
You have found [Iron Ingot]: Can be used as materials for crafting
You have found [Blue Herb]: Nullify negative effects
You have found [Red Herb]: Enhance the effect of other herbs
You have found [Green Herb]: Heal a small portion of your HP
You have found [Rusty Tanegashima]: Require [Bullet] to use. +160(+5% AP) Damage
Ding!
By looting 10 or more bodies, you have earned the title of: [Necrophilia]
Ding!
[Necrophilia]: You hold a bizarre fascination to the dead and is often morbidly curious about them, up to the point where one would refer to you as "creepy"
- More valuable loots gained when plundering a corpse
....I seems to have got a little distracted from my initial purpose, but on the plus side, I found some pretty interesting items here
[Item Repair]. I casted the skill on both the Tanegashima and the Yari I found. Soon enough they return to their former, brand new state, shining with unused cleanliness. Not a speck of dust can be found on them
Ahhh. An actual Gun. I miss you so much, my baby!
I squealed, holding the matchlock device in my hand with a gentle tenderness while spinning around, despite the fact that such a thing have a limited reloading time and probably wouldn't help that much in combat
Ha, It's funny how people keep thinking of Samurais as the "honorable soldiers who sticks to the way of the sword" because of those damn Hollywood movie. Thanks to that I wasted 3 years of my whole childhood believing in the bullshit they fed me
Ever since the 1400s, guns have been incorporated into Japanese warfare as seen by the battle of Nagashino, where devastating firearms tore through charging samurai cavalry is one of the most famous and influential battles in the history of the jap folks
No matter how much the samurai loved their bow, they weren't oblivious to the fact that this weapon obviously outclassed their previous artillery choice. Several forms of guns were used, from the general old-fashioned musket-like gun we tend to think about, to large hand cannons, to even the rare full canon
All in all, they were all used with brutal efficiency. One of the greatest daimyo of the Warring States era, Oda Nobunaga, was well renowned for his brilliance with gunnery tactics. Others, such as Takeda Shingen, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Date Masamune were also well known for using snipers, entrenched artillery, and sometimes just mass amounts of gunners, with devastating results..
Of course, all of that was before the Sakoku policy. Now they are just glorified sword-wielder in the eyes of those who have the audacity to call themselves as "weebs" just by watching a few anime on the internet
Damn those Tokugawas for actually doing their job....and that "Golden Kamuy" manga for turning me into a weeb myself in the first place
...Anyway, I'm probably ranting too much right now
Putting all those items in my inventory, I held out the iron ingots in front of me
[Item Creation]
Ding!
x1 [Iron Ingot] => x10 [Iron Bullet]
I put the gunpowder into the pan and the muzzle, before putting the bullet in and scouring it thoroughly, snapping the matchlock shut with a click
Click
Armed and ready, baby
Now the next thing I need would be a clue

3 hours later
I could confidently say that I've scourged the entire goddamn village and hadn't found a single thing. No traces or evidence, apart from the corpses I found in each house I entered. Whoever, and I'm pretty sure it's a person now judging from the ways they are killed, did this either for fun or revenge
That's all I can thought of, really. There's really nothing that was stolen. The grains, the money, even the women are left there as they are (and I've checked, there are no sign of semen on them so they couldn't have been raped)
Perhaps I should have just returned to that Ren look-alike and ask him what hap-
Snap
THUNK THUNK THUNK
Upon hearing the sudden noise, three copies of the kitchen knife appeared in my hand as I flicked them at the wall behind me. They sunk deep into the wood and protruded out from the other side, which resulted from a girlish yelp being heard
"Wait, i'm not the demon!" A girl stumbled out from the paper door. Her clothes are disheveled, her hair is messy, yet still burning with a bright orange. She
At that moment, as I stared into the girl's eyes, only one thing crossed my mind
'Hey. This girl looks like Nora Valkyrie from RWBY'
"What's your name?"
"I'm Nora, Nora Valkyrie!"
Right. And I'm Ozpin's son. There's no way you can be her...or can you?
I lifted her chin up with my finger and began observing her, while the girl squirmed under my stare, a blush forming on her face
Yep. There's no mistaking it, she really is Nora from RWBY
First is Ruby, Ren, and now Nora. The chances of them all bumping into me by coincidence is pretty low, almost impossible even. That's why I was so skeptical when I first met them
But now that I did, let's just think I'm starting to get suspicious of the fact that I may, in fact, be existing inside a male reader insert story, what's with me conveniently bumping into the wrong people at the wrong time and all
Plucking out the knives embedded on the wall, I lead Nora inside the house, so that we can have somewhere comfortable to talk
"what happened here last night?" I turned to her "Who attacked your village? Do you know why?"
Nora shivered, a look of fear crossed her mind. Clearly whatever took place in this village has traumatized her
"I-it was the Demon with the Umbrella" She shook her head "It came at night and killed everyone here. Only I was able to escape by hiding underneath the dead bodies to mask my scent"
Suffice to say, I was intrigued
"Demon, you say? Is that what you call the Grimm?"
She looked at me with a strange gaze, as if I'm an alien that came from another world
Actually, that is true in a way
"N-no, demons are different than Grimms. They are lesser in number, but far stronger than the other, and smarter as well"
Ho, how fascinating. It seems like another parallel has been drawn here. Just what could have changed to make it so different from the original universe?
"These demons...can you tell me more about them?"
"They only appear at night. They hate sunlight. And they hate the Grimm as well, even though they're not that much better" She rattled off a bunch of information, one which I easily absorbed "Their senses are very sharp. They like to prey on villages like us for entertainment, but they always make sure everybody was killed by the end of the night"
“Hmm”
I looked outside.
It was already dusk. The setting sun is slowly retreating down the mountain, it's color a deep red shade
"So, assuming they figure out if there's even a single survivor left, they'd still make sure to hunt them down?"
"Yeah"
"......"
I shouldn't have let Ren lied out there
"GODSPEEEEEEEEEEEED!"

Author's Note: I know, I know, this is short as it is. I've been busy reading several old manga (aka Samurai Champloo, Rurouni Kenshin, and Golden Kamuy) for inspiration recently and I haven't that much time spent for this story
Damn, I don't even know what I'm supposed to say anymore, so here's a lesson on Japanese History/Culture
1/Yari: A traditional nihonto made in the form of a straight-headed spear. The art of wielding this is called sojutsu
->Insert picture of Yari<-
2/Tanegashima: Japanese matchlock-rifle. The introduction of this weapon during the 15th century in Japan had changed the way their wars are fought significantly in the next few hundred of years
->Insert picture of Tenegashima<-
3/Sakoku policy: the policy of under which no foreigner or Japanese could enter or leave the country on . The policy was enacted by the under through a number of edicts and policies from 1633-1639 and remained in effect until 1853 with the arrival of Commodore and the opening of Japan. It was still illegal to leave Japan until the (1868).
