Author's Note: Originally this is going to be a 9k words lone following (y/n)'s journey in the modern world before moving back to the past, but I've been burned out by the 12k drafts that came before it
Yeah, deleting a draft with a shit ton of words inside tends to do that to people
Anyway, it's going to be two or at most three parts before this arc ends and the other continues. After the Babylonia part concludes there will be a slight void to fill in. Assuming I want to take care of the Tsukihime problem first and I was being optimistic with my calculation, it's gonna be approximately...12 chapters before Fate/Zero start
Shit. I knew I promised you guys the timeskip much earlier, but what's with Wattpad deleting this book so abruptly the plot in my head just kind of vanish.
I have to start a new one from scratch...fuck me
<><><><><><>
Nanaya. Seven Nights
My Mystic Eyes of Death Perception shone in the darkness's embrace.
They are eyes that bends the law of the living world, reversing the flow of materialistic structure in order to find the root upon which all weakness comes from. They are the eyes that pierced the soul and actualize death in their basest, most natural form
Everything I see...becomes tainted with death
Everything I touch...ceased to exist
With every petals of reality I caressed, the smell of blood grew more pungent. Life itself bleeds through the passage of my sight as they denied nature the concept of eternity. The definition of what is "real" and what is not, what is "life" and what is "death", all faded away into nothingness
It does not matter anyway. All things eventually come to an end, rendering their existence obsolete before history
Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust, as they said. One's mortality around every corner, the inevitability of all things are laid out before me with the same transparency as a written page in a book. Every verse memorized and free to alter to my wish
A human life can simply be taken away at the flick of a finger. The brilliant flame of life all human are known for, easily snuffed out under my gaze
Yet even in a world tainted with death, there are others who can see life. Others with eyes like me
Shiki Ryougi and Shiki Tohno
Unlike mine, their perception of the world beyond life is finite. If their what their eyes perceive are droplets of water in a puddle, mine is an ocean with a never-ending depth, peering into that cold abyss and bearing knowledge of a plane long forgotten
To witness what came before creation and destruction of the first atom in the universe. To kill the source of all potential life before they are scattered across the multiverse. To take way the effect of Kaleidoscope on all things before they materialize. It all becomes as natural as breathing
The question is...how long will it take for this to become average to me?
"I am the trigger of my gun"
Hello, I'm (Y/n) (L/n), the current wielder of the Zeroth, First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth True Magic, as well as any existing sub-branches of mysteries under them
This is how my story began. With a flashback
Or rather, the flashback to that night where the trouble first begins
<><><><><><><>
When you wind back the clock far enough, eventually you'll arrive at a point in time where you are most content with your life
Alternatively, you can see the moment yout life took a turn into a spiraling shithole
For me, said shithole lies somewhere between the second I placed my foot in this world to the present
I am a changed man. This unfortunate shell of unhappiness who found himself in a land so similar to his world, yet so different. A man who has his family torn from his grasp, his connection to the world he held dear cut apart just because he is too powerful to even return back to that world
I never asked for power, you know?
Before the traspiration of these events I was a teenager who just happens to be into TYPEMOON.
Yes. Anime. Manga. Light Novels. From goofy ecchi comedies to dark realistic fantasy, I am a simple man who loves everything equally with the same passion. Never did I think I'd get sucked into one of my more watched series and made to stay there
Somewhere between that fairly normal period of my life, I remembered striving to make a friend. It was a simple dream only a kid could come up, but to a shy guy like me, a friend would be the ultimate social goal I place for myself upon this new world
I only want a normal friend
A certain killer chasing me down the street with a knife in her hand...does not classify as a normal friend
The presence closed in on me.
"Vijñaptimātratā: Chokushi no Magan"
The lines of mortality severed. Mystic Eyes of Death Perception shone a dazzling blue color as three strikes come from the dark. Three slashes that closed in on my position, perfectly calculated to maximize the damage to my body upon contact
I kicked a random rock in their direction
Noble Phantasm: Rock (A++)
- The manifestation of nature's law into reality, this random pebble can alter the "flow" of physics upon contact with any phenomenon occuring inside the World, manipulating the four fundamental forces of quantum mechanics in accordance to the user's command
The pebble bounced off the first one mid-flight, causing them to impact the second one. They bounced off each other and ricocheted, cancelling out the third one at a cross just as they were about to reach me
With the three strikes averted, I risked a look at my attacker chasing behind me
Shiki Ryougi
The protagonist of Kara no Kyoukai, she is kind of a special case in my "people to avoid at all cost". Not only is she heir to a famous clan of demon hunter, the girl is also an alter ego to Void Shiki
Normally I would try my damn best to avoid such a person.
But hey, you know what? If you don't find trouble, trouble will eventually find you
Blue yukata flapping in the night, hidden beaneath the iconic red jacket. The person underneath them blurred past where I had stood just moments before, her knife slicing the air where the lines of death preveiously laid
Do you remember when me and Shiki first met, upon that moonlit night? The snow falls gently on our forms as we have a simple conversation about life and death, before we part ways as two different people
I did not remember much of it
She did, apparently
With one step I vaulted over the house just beyond her knife's reach. Shiki followed suit with the same agility, throwing the knife in her hand as an extended attack that I dodged by gyrating midair
The small interval enabled her to close the distance between us
We both landed atop the building. Catching the knife faling back to her palm she slashed at me.
I kicked up a roof tile that shielded me from the slash, utilizing the reduced momentum and 5 years of experience playing Dark Souls to roll past her following attack
How long has it been since this went on?
Three nights since she'd first took the jump me on my way to home wielding that knife of hers. Three nights she'd pursued me across the darkness - a killer to her mark whenever I so much as I take a walk outside
It has become a game of cat and mouse for us, playing with each other across the dark valleys of this town amidst the setting moon.
A glint in the darkness signifies the moment of the kill
I dropped down in time to avoid the knife sweep flying over my head
The second slash came from my side at the same interval, I deflected them with my toe nails and jumped up as the third slash raked across the ground underneath me. In the same breath the fourth and fifth slash overlapped each other, converging on me midair
A kitchen knife materialized in my hand. I tore open a gash in reality, causing the two strikes to be absorbed into the infinite void beyond
The girl is someone with an experienced gait and the ferocity of an animal in her movement. I noted
Which is strange. Is canon Shiki supposed to be this aggressive?
A shadow blurred across the openings behind me. The tip of the knife inches from my throat as I sidestepped the swift attack. In the dark, her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception reflected a primal sense of bloodlust in them
I kicked back to put some distance between us
Yep. This girl is loony
This has gone on long enough. I decided
Having a girl desiring to kill me is quite flattering. But I don't have the effort to deal with it in a sensible way
I Traced several Black Keys in one hand as my foot touched the ground. On the other I held a Calico submachine gun that opened fire as soon as it came into existence
Without waiting Shiki dashed forward, meeting the rain of projectiles head on. Her knife sliced through the bullets, intersecting them at their respective point of death. With another flick of her wrist they all scattered in the wind
A frown crossed my face. This obviously wouldn't have an effect on her. The girl moves faster than your average human, is the master of high-spec movement comparable to a Nanaya at their peak killing condition
The Calico clicked empty, I threw them sideway to summon another gun while brandishing the Keys
I ran several calculation on her trajectory. Only a window of 0.8 seconds is needed to bridge the gap between us
The knife she held have an illusory range of three meters. Within those three meters is a land of death, where everything that passed by instantly become a target for her Eyes
Factoring that in, 0.021s until engagement range
I threw the Black Keys. Three projectiles streaked through the air, zeroing at her from three different angles.
With almost leisure ease she tore through the steel blades the moment they enter her range-
"I am the trigger of my gun..."
-Only to meet the Origin bullet heading for her head once the decoy had been shattered.
Shiki's eyes widened at the sight of the Thompson Contender in my hand
Now, let's have a small lesson in Magecraft, and the effect they have on the concept of 'death'
Death. A philosophical dilemma branching out from certain topics of meta science. Spiritually speaking death exists in the form of the soul's return of the Root. As without the soul, something is not alive, and as they are not living, they are inapable of dying
But is the soul itself a satisfactoy prerequisite to the answer about death?
They are in the rules of alchemy-
My hand coiled back from the firepower. The metal shell ejected from the Contender
- However, thing are different once external interference are taken into account. The condition of the body, the separate mutations caused by Magecraft, deformation of the soul through twisted influence
Imagine the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception as a visual scanners for mana. Being a rainbow-ranked artifact capable of negating all properties about the inner workings of a single Magecraft with split second exposure, the eyes can dispel them with ease once the Lines of Death have been determined and terminated
A pair of eyes would have problem perceiving the concept of death itself on a single target if they are not considered living beings, however Shiki's had shown herself to be able to kill spatial distortions itself. A mere intangible form of law should be nothing to her
The girl raised her knife and slashed down on the bullet
-But that is where I use this mentality against Shiki Ryougi
The round fired is a Traced version of Kiritsugu's Origin with modified enhancement for the kick. As she does not actively use Magic Circuits in combat, their main purpose is not to disrupt her circuit system
It is the container for a high-thaumaturgy Bounded Field. I regulated mana in individual currents across the two time frame to bind them together, then used "severance" to cut them off from the normal World
The bullet was cut in two, and so the influence it has on her cut off
[Time Alter: Overclock]
In that one moment, time stilled around us
The World stirred and split in two, confused at the violation of the laws it'd established. Every single possible theoretical concepts in relation to time warped at once with the existence of that single projectile soaring through the air
I watched as she staggered back, two halves of the metallic object clanking down by her side
Death bypass all form of defense and revert the offending object to a primal state of absolution where its mortality can then be manifested into the physical plane. Severence of the Lines would negate the effect they have on the core of the World.
Time Alter is something that counters that. Severance and Binding was the key that separate the flow of time between two point in this dimension. Similar to Kiritsugu's body the two concepts maintains an abstraction that accelerate the innate components to manipulate the happening of events in a finite space.
Imagine a rubber band. The more you stretch them, the stronger the tension force between them becomes.
The two point in time- one of the World's, and one created by Time Alter, are similar. Set to assert more force the more they are separated - thus the amount of seconds spent flying in the air is proportionate to the damage done to the target once they destroy the bullet
As soon as the concept of "Death" materialize, cutting it in half, the Magecraft cancelled and the flow of time return to normal. With the shift between two distinct realities, the victim caught inside it will experience the backlash when disrupting the "rubber band" known as the laws of the world
That is to say, very unpleasant
The fabic of spacetime exploded inward in a furious tide of death
Shiki Ryougi coughed blood. Intense pain shot through her body as the girl's organs get violently torn up from the inside by the twisting force of nature. Her knees buckled, she momentarily paused from the wound
The metal casing clanged against the pavement as (Y/n) took a deep breath. He put force unto his feet, the ground cracking underneath him as he did so
"Joestar's secret technique. Activate"
Unbeknownst to him, the crimson red only serves to fill her vision with more lust for battle. Shiki's bloodshot eyes snapped up, eagerly awaiting for the mark before her to attack
With burning determination in his eyes, (Y/n) dashed forward at superhuman speed...
...in the opposite direction
"NIGERUNDAYO!"
"...."
<><><><><><>
Wind combed through my hair as I moved at speed beyond the scope of human ability
Across the tree line, between the houses, through the twisting alleyways of Misaki. Every step was enhanced with a strategical maneuver aimed to take the enemy offguard
When faced against an impossible foe, you have two choice. Fight or flight.
I chose flight because fuck that
With the minor amount of damage I've inflicted on her, it's unlikely Shiki would catch up with me at this rate
I risked a glance behind me. Seeing no one, I nodded with a self-assured smile
She did not. I was safe for the rest of the night
Naturally, as the night is clear, I slowed down and jogged some more, taking the chance to visit my partner at her house
"And that's what happened" I replied, sipping on a cup of tea
Across from me, Ciel stared at me with apprehension
"What?" She whispered, the cup in her hand near the point of shattering due to how tightly she is gripping them "Can you repeat that?"
"Oh come on, I wasn't killed so it isn't that bad" I raised the cup "Not with the tea you make, which is quite good, actually. The taste is more diluted than Matcha but the kick is still there. May I know the brand you're using?"
"Just the average Sencha leaves from the market that I bought this morn- Don't you dare switch the topic!"
I swirled the cup in my hand, watching as the substance gracefully slides around the bowl in accordance to my movement
The traditional brew, I see. The information obtained from [Structural Analysis] also gives me as much
A dry breeze of a midsummer day, mixed with the chilly flavor of the autumn wind. A mixture that serves to refresh the drinker's spirit upon consumption
Sencha, or loose leaf green tea, is the most popular kind of tea in Japan. Unlike matcha, this particular type is made from tea plants grown in full sun, which gives the water a darker color and more astringent flavor
The preparation method also differs from matcha, with the the tea leaves steeped in hot water to produce a clear substance that ranges from yellow-green in color to a dark green-brown. Green tea is known for providing an energizing boost without as much of a caffeine crash as coffee. While many people may think of it as only a hot drink, in Japan unsweetened iced green tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages.
I've learned to appreciate tea for a couple of reasons. Nowadays, it seems as though nothing in this world is right anymore. Wars and famine's still a thing even after humanity have made so much progress in technology. Is it the will of Fate, or is it human nature that leas us to our own annihilation?
Nonetheless, tea calms my mind
For that reason, tea is the second best
"Are you seriously having a monologue about tea while ignoring the fact that a person from the Ryougi family had made an attack on you?" Ciel bristled "Come on, (Y/n). I know you're never the type to needlessly engage in conflict but this is taking it too far. At least grow a backbone and fight back"
"I did. It ended up with her organs being ruptured and blood vessels to explode, in case you didn't listen" I frowned
"A decapitated limb there, a missing leg there. It's worth the extra mile to be thorough"
"Ne quid nimis, Ciel. I doubt you have heard of it"
"That time in Cairo is the same. You sleep on the job while leaving me to take care of our target by myself"
"It's training. Surely a mere blood-sucking homosexual would not scare you?"
"What scares me are not homosexuals. What scares me is you still sleeping after he dropped a steamroller on you!"
"Uhhh....senpai's?"
"Yeah?" We replied at the same time, turning to the second visitant of this night
A lone boy with black hair and blue eyes sat at the corner of the room.
He is someone with average build and normally would not catch anyone's attention while walking on the street. The singular thing that stood out from here, however, is the pair of glasses on his eyes
Mystic Eye killers
Shiki Tohno looked uncomfortably at the two of us. When he got here, I did not know, but the fact he is apparently acquaintanced to my partner already raised flags in my head regarding the situation's delicacy here
After all, I've been observing him for a long time. The boy is the protagonist of "Tsukihime", and anything particular happening to him is sure as heck not going to be of good consequences for me
"Can somebody explain to me what is happening?"
"(Y/n) here have the bright idea of going out at night and meet a lunatic on his way home, so he ran here" My partner dismissed with a casual wave of her hand. My eyes twitched
"Hey..."
"And she's a Ryougi to boot"
"You're talking as if all Ryougi's all bad"
"They certainly are for a clan of people with MPD that slowly goes insane over time" She sent a look my way "Face it, the family's dangerous and it's a good idea not to meet them in the first place"
"Weird, I used to think the same about immortals with superhuman strength who killed a town's worth of people in cold blood. Apparently there's a difference I didn't notice"
Ciel's jaw clicked shut
"That was a low blow coming from you, (L/n)"
"The fact that you can be injured by a single comment like this worried me" I leaned my cheek on one hand "Grow some thick skin. Like how I grow my backbone"
"Grr..."
"Oh come on, have I ever judged you for your history like you did them?"
She opened her mouth to reply but...quietly shook her head.
"No. You did not" The girl admitted "You never treat me different than before you learn of it"
"Yeah. So I wouldn't stand you doing the same for others" I rolled my eyes "A person is not determined by their past or the family they came from. While I agree some share a common trait, they are ultimately their own individual hiding beneath those names"
The Tohsaka's are not all self-entitled pragmatists
The Einzbern's are not just mere emotionless homunculi
It would be unreasonable to categorize any of those into the "bad" or "good" guys. The intricacy of TYPEMOON's characters is that they're not designed to be likable. They're designed to be relatable. Each person's motives are explained in ways that could make the readers sympathize with, no matter how atrocious the deeds they've done
So, putting a label on fictional characters just because you think you know them is a surefire way to get a self-insert killed
Luckily I am not a self-insert, and I am not stupid enough to be one
"I have no qualms letting you have your own secret. Just know that whatever happens, I'm totally fine with being your partner" I sighed and leaned back, deciding not to say anything further
Ciel looked at me, flashes of guilt danving behind the Executor's eyes
"Sorry" She said, gaze casting downward "I'm just- This is the first time you've came close to being injured. I just don't know what to feel about that"
I blinked. I took another sip of tea
"Senpai" Shiki decided to rekindle the conversation. The boy was looking between us like this is the first time we've been in an argument "May I ask how you two know each other?"
"He and I work in the Burial Agency. Our job is to hunt down anomalies near these area - or sometime abroad- so as to not alert regular people of the Moonlit world's existence" She smiled "At school, we're also friends, so that's that"
"I'm mostly a part-timer, so lately I've been teaching her to take care of herself better" I added in thought
The girl nodded "Also, did you know why that girl attack you? It may just be the Ryougi's innate madness taking over, but on the up chance you know her we may be able to narrow the suspects down a bit"
"We met once before, she struck me as the odd girl who'd often wander off herself. As for the reasons why..."
I shook my head
"No matter. I've been intruding on your alone time too much" I stood up, the Tatami mat rustling beneath me "With your tea my mind and spirit are rejunevated enough to stay awake. Perhaps it is my time to leave"
"Are you sure you're going to be okay on the way back? I wouldn't mind you staying over here until tomorrow"
I stopped, my hand inches from the door handle.
The subtle shift in atmosphere is not something an average person could pick off.
Something in the air had changed. Condensed, intoxicating, wreathing its way into the surrounding mana like poison into a blood stream and slowly polluting it
Unnatural is what it is
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Shiki discreetly reaching for the kitchen knife
I glanced back at my partner, only to see the subtle glint of the Black Keys under her sleeves
Calmly, I took a final sip of Sencha tea
"Oh please, Ryougi's been injured enough not to continue our game of catch" I replied "Besides, my Familiars will be quite worried if I don't get home before the moon set its course"
"That they will, (L/n), that they will"
Shiki Tohno smiled
Ciel smiled
I laughed
The next moment, I throw down the Reinforced cup of tea, and the apartment exploded in a flurry of death
<><><><><><>
It all made sense now
I flew through the air in an arc. The momentary of weightleessness overtook me before I came careening down onto a nearby building, bouncing several times off the ground as I did so
The sound of sharp whistling reached my ears. I rolled to the side just as a barrage of Black Keys impaled where I'd once been. Getting up to my feet I dashed back to avoid the knife slash, narrowly avoiding having my lines of death severed
A blade materialized in my grip as I blocked several more Black Keys with one hand. With the other I formed a single spear in my hand upon his advance
It was blood red in color. A horrible abomination toward the Moonlit world toward those who knows of its true nature
"Gae Dearg: Crimson Rose of Exorcism"
This spear denies magic enhancement
Logically speaking it should have been enough to dispel whatever Magecraft lingers in the air, so I brought this out first
Reality twisted open as I thrust it forward, the spear piercing Shiki by his shoulder
For a moment, pain flashed across his face, enough to make him ground to a halt mid air. The boy stood there with the knife in his hand as he slowly looked around with confusion
"What, what am I-"
I detected the subtle shift of magical energy as they surrounded him. Shiki's eyes glazed once more as he nonchalantly ripped the magic-negating spear of his body, blood reversing mid-flow and flesh stitching together as the wound began closing at an accelerated pace
My eyes flickered upward. Up above, the sky let out a faint ripple, confirming my suspicion
For it shows that my hypothesis was correct. It would seem a strong barrier has been put over this town to magically enchant people inside it, at the same time activating an area-of-effect hypnosis ritual that compels them to turn against me
No, on second observation it appears I was wrong about its efective radius. The Bounded Field is not a Bounded Field, and it not only covers the town as I initially assumed
It does not just cover Japan. It does not just cover this side of the planet.
It encompass the entire universe itself
The revelation made me click my tongue
The one who did this is not a normal Magus. Even if there is enough mana for such a process, no Magecraft would allow someone to resist the strength of a Noble Phantasm, not even mentioning the scale at which they're used
Void Shiki sprung to the forefront of my mind as she is one of the few individuals who could instigate such a wide-scale spell. But she has no reason to do so
Zelretch, perhaps? No, Kaleidoscope's multi refractional phenomenon does not fit the Bounded Field's properties
Any of the Twenty Seven Apostle Ancestor is viable. Yet, I just don't see any of their Reality Marble with range that covers this much ground
Grabbing another two Keys that emerged from her bible Ciel hurled them at me. I deflected the spinning projectiles midair and redirected them toward Shiki's slash. The blades broke in half as he sliced through them
My eyes flickered back to see Ciel slashing at a street pole. Spining in the air, she kicked the metal rod at me to which I cut in half. The interval allow for both of them to close the distance to me
She plunged the Keys at my heart while Shiki's knife aimed to severe my neck
With no choice, I used the first non-lethal spell that came to mind
"Bend"
Reality twisted to my words as both weapons bounced off their target. I remained there unharmed, eight Black Keys materializing in my hand
"Scatter"
My hand moved to a blur. Eight blades flew out from the tip of my fingers and pierced their flesh. The barrage blew the two back with the intention of pinning the two of them to the wall with each Black Key going through their limbs.
Yet even then it's still not enough
Shiki's Mystic Eyes of Death Perception broke through the blades restraining him.
Opposite from the boy, mana flooded through Ciel's body, forcing the Traced Black Keys to shatter as she overload them past their limit
With their restraint removed they bolt akin to broken puppets toward me
Eight Black Keys spun through the air, stabbing through the ground and surrounding walls. With a quick incantation from Ciel they widen into barricades of steel, blocking my vision from the two of them
I stamped the ground and jumped out from their range. With two steps I was soaring through the night sky of Misaki, a rain of blades left my hand as they descended on them. Steel met steel...and nothing changed
More Black Keys were summoned as they used them to obstruct my vision, causing me to exhale slowly
I spun and landed on a rooftop. The chilly night wind brushed through my hair, cooling my mind as I took a moment to consider the situation
With all the seals restraining my body, my capabilities become limited. I can easily blow up this makeshift defense if needed be, but that run the chance of them not getting out it alive
Briefly, the option of knocking them out crossed my mind before they were promptly discarded
The strike from Gae Dearg should have sent a big enough shock through Shiki's nervous system to render him unconscious. Yet he remained standing. Why is that?
Evidently they are operating on the human's consciousness. The Magecraft influencing these people's mind are rooted deep inside their mentality upon the order to eliminate the anomaly in front of them
These people are now nothing more than mind-controlled undead. Their souls are trapped in their own body. If killed, they simply revive and continue with their objective singlemindedly until their completion
Two hands held out. From it, blue motes of light gathered as the objects in my mind took shape
Rule Breaker's appeared in my hands
I put them in a cross shape
The next moment, I kicked my foot off the building, descending on the metal fortress with the two blades in my hand.
Slashing through the thick layers of steel, I was met with a barrage of Keys courtesy of Ciel, all aiming at my vital points. My hands blurred as I deflected them off my way, grabbing two of the Keys midair between my fingers to throw them back at her
She moved to evade, while Shiki with his inferior physical training could not keep up and became a pin cushion with the two projectiles emerging from his other side
They both made for a counterattack, but I was already in front of them
Twin slashes negating through their feeble defense as I sliced cleanly through the two figure. The sound of magecraft being nullified almost brought a grin to my ear
"(Y/n), what's going o-"
Almost
Whatever Ciel was about to say got cut off. Even faster than before, the hypnosis returned and their confusion turned back into that emotionless looks from before
So...even with Enhanced Rule Breaker, an anti-thaumaturgy Noble Phantasm of the highest order, I cannot dispel the enchantment placed on them
More attack came my way
"Fuck you"
The blows shattered midair, the laws of physics itself too afraid to touch the irritated (Y/n)
I just...don't care anymore. I give up
Sighing, I got up and threw the dagger as they pierced cleanly through Ciel's head
She staggered back. The dagger exploded, taking her upper half with it as blood and gore showered down on us
My fist shot out and punched Shiki in the face, killing him instantly. Meat chunks and organs spattered over the tiles from the force of my strike
And then there was silence. I looked at the corpses of the two before me in contemplation.
Their bodies were destroyed beyond recognition, but the field will still heal them after a minute or so. That gives me time to think up a viable solution to this mess
My eyes once again founded the rippling in the sky.
Alteration of reality is not something strange to me. What's concerning is the way they're set out across the Field. To intercept orders from the World requires Mana to retain their form, while keeping it stabilized in a wide radius is something a few individual could do
This is a kind of pseudo-Magecraft that spreads throughout the universe. At the very least that would have classified them as an Anti-World Noble Phantasm.
The pattern in the sky reminds me of the Swirl of the Root - a cacophony of paradoxes set in gradually declining states of insanity, infinitely branching out, yet infinitely branching in, trapping their mind in a state of eternal contradiction
Inside the individual known as (Y/n) (L/n), there exists two presence
One is the ever-lasting. Eternity
The other is the ever-present. Infinity
Each aspects are as equally lacking as they are equally fulfilling. A cup that is half but full, that is half but empty.
Or perhaps it's empty with fullness, or full of emptiness, or perhaps the glass was not a glass in the first place. Perhaps it's an Eldritch monster in disguise, holder of the Sixth Magic, waiting for just the right time to complete its alien objective in capturing this strange phenomenon
Maybe this analogy was broken from the start. To make a comparison betweeen the existence of a glass, whose volume and dimensions are pathetically finite, to an existence whose barest nature is as inexplicable as a singularity itself is pure madness. Regardless, what comes around comes around, and in him these two concepts revolve around each other, "infinite" to "full", "eternity" of "nothingness", being in an independent state under influence of a non-existent gravitational force between them
The duality of this nature ensures the perpetual cycle named "Fate" remains constant. Like a clock it goes round and round on a journey of insanity. Spiraling infinitely, ceaselessly, relentlessly toward the end with a single goal in mind. The goal that is the embodiment of (Y/n)'s imprint upon this world
Of one who only desires to be an average man, but will always end up as something more.
This is, if for a lack of a better word, a rational but misguided attempt at doing the impossible. For how can one man be so desperate to reach a fate man wish to avoid? The desire of men had always been bizarre in nature. Some wants power, some wants recognition, others wants love. Things that makes them strong. Things that makes them important. Things that are important to them
But perhaps...just perhaps...if being average is enough to fill the heart of one unambitious man, then is it now a worthy desire in itself?
(Y/n) made peace with it. He had accepted no matter what happens. No matter how strong or how much authority an individual like him possess. Even if he were to ascend beyond the Root, at his heart he's still a mortal, average man. And nothing could change that
Not everyone around him think the same
Averageness is, after all, in the eyes of it's beholder
<><><><><><><><><>
Up above, the moon hangs low. The first of the Nine Celestial Bodies that will one day be known as the TYPE's gazed back at us
Right now they're just planets. But in time perhaps, those bodies will gain enough intelligence to be the familiars I knew today. Reliable girls they are, helping me with my average life in earnest. It is thanks to them I have some semblance of company in my free time
"Gaia, what do you think when you gaze at the stars?"
The stars, father?
The embodiment of the Earth's consciousness curled up around me. Her body made of a combination between natural components. Flesh made from mud and hair made of leaves, forming into different bulging sections across the body akin to a female, but ended up like a deformed golem instead
At least it wasn't a giant made out of magma
Or a dragon made of gold that spits hellfire
It was a poor attempt at imitating humanoid shape, but she will get better in time
I lied there, head leaning against my child's robust frame. On my hand is the latest edition of the "Hansel and Gretel" I created using the First Magic. I have just finished telling them to her, and right now we're simply enjoying the night above us after a day of studying. We gazed at the sky, watching as the glimmering stars revolved around the black canvas of the cosmos
They look edible
Gaia innocently replied
"Of course, you gluttonous child. I don't think they're going to be very tasty though"
Tasty?
Adjective regarding "taste", a biological concept. It's the feeling that let you differentiate between different kind of neural signals sent through a combination of bodyparts
The earth shifted. She looked at me in awe
Father is omniscient
"Well, yeah...I can be. But I am not"
How is it that you possess every single page of knowledge in the world, and yet still refuse to admit what is obvious?
"I don't. When you grow up into a beautiful young woman and I into a grumpy old man, you'll learn just how big the world around us are" I hummed "The universe and it's beauty cannot be truly appreciated through father's words alone. In time, even my presence will fade into the Root, never to be seen again"
A finger poked against her forehead
"In time, even that which is undying can be dead" I closed my eyes, ignoring the anxious rumbling of the beneath me who could not get the answer she wanted
But Father always know best
You have always been there watching...so, you will not leave us, right?
Father...?
(Y/n)'s soft snoring sounded in the silence afterward. A happy smile crossed Gaia's face as she curled up to him
<><><><><><><><>
Do you want to know something funny?
I never asked for any of this
Sure, you could say that my existence has always been unneeded. A remnant of my original soul, separated from its main body in an attempt to cleanse itself of the power coiling inside it.
I still possessed some of the powers he has, but ultimately I am just a side of the entity known as (Y/n) (L/n)
That means I have came to possess some of his more...undesirable traits
The tendency to pick up strays for example, was an annoying habit we just can't seem to get rid of
The first two strays he sometime in the past were not too unremarkable. Rin Tohsaka and Sakura Matou. Just a project the Magus himself take to entertain himself during his time on a mission. It may have been found on the basis of wanting to help one of them from suffering, but a large part of it have been due to him wanting to test out the limit of his skills, as per the curious nature of a Magus
How far can a person go, if given the right push by the right person, at the right time? Will they break apart? Will they harden their resolve, accept their true potential and move on, leaving their peers in dust?
For Rin it was somebody who would simply lend an ear to her
For Sakura it was somebody who will love her, and somebody to love in return
Which would explain Parvati and Kama being her incarnations in FGO, honestly
Attention to individuality. An ear to listen to. A shoulder to lean on. A fatherly figure to consult in. Emotional support are vital to their future growth as average Magus and, more importantly, as his student. As a butler and teacher, the Alter Ego known as Walter is in the perfect role for all of them
It works surprisingly. Just like that, with kindness and not with strictness, with care and not discipline, with encouragement and not punishment, he not only pushed their progress far beyond the conventional Magus, but motivates them on their own path to build a legend of their own
I'm sure that won't come back to bite me in the ass later. I'm sure of it
But, I am...straying slightly from the topic. Yes.
Because strays is the topic
Strays are never meant to be pets.
A burden of taking in two students with family problems is that when they started considering you their family, you find it hard to consider them with the same objective outlook from before. It's not easy warding off the affection they returned for something you'd consider a pointless gesture, and in doing so you realize just how much of an asshole you've been to them
I have learned that Gaia may be the most insistent stray I've met so far
She's impressionable. She's fierce. She's protective of what is hers. And she's...alone. That made her dangerous. Not in the evil sense, but in the idea of the catastrophes she can cause without proper parenting.
It is a fact that a child develops loose common sense when not exposed to any pre-established standards shown through environmental interactions, and growing up by yourself can be hard for her, who's barely taken her first step when I found her at the edge of the planet
Reluctantly, I found myself becoming a caretaker or the Consciousness of the Earth
My first and foremost mistake is to think of Gaia as someone who needs guidance
I've forgot just how influential a being she could become once the Earth had fully developed
I've forgot just how much of an influence I would have on her once it completed forming, and the wheel of human history first spun
<><><><><><><><>
The problem arise with the creation of men
I was not surprised Gaia had thought about creating them
I was, however, surprised that she created them in my image
You are beautiful. Am I not allowed to replicate that beauty in any forms?
That is what she had said to me as the will of the earth utilized its authority, bringing shape to the human form and imbuing them with the concept of "life".
She looked nervous as she present the scared pair to me, like a child who is showing her first clay sculpture to a pair of disapproving parents
As a human myself, it is very hard not to disapprove the creation of what was supposedly my ancestor. If I said 'no' she might just dump the first human into the natural trashcan known as a "volcano", and humanity as a whole would stop existing
"They're beautiful" I replied back, nervously
Of course. They are made in your image after all. She preened. If they aren't, I would have just threw them into space and be done with it
Please don't
I examined the pair of prototype humans. They were Cacausian with a dash of Asiatic in there, but due to the color it was impossible to determine if they are black or not. Satisfied with the result I turned to her
"Then, will you give me more children, Gaia?"
Her face lit up in a thousand watts smile
As long as its father father, I can create as many child as you want
Okay. Problem solved, humanity will not go extinct because of a dumbass Magus
Thus begin the first of a kin line that will one day become the planet's dominant specie. Being a creation of Gaia, they were given a place in the food chain and natural evolution. From the smalles of bacterias
I exhaled in relief. Finally, I could lay back and watch as everything falls into place
Oh how wrong I was...
As their culture develop, new concepts were given birth to shape the world in their knowledge. In some case metaphorically...
"No, Gaia!"
In some case literally
"You can't just give birth to a Primordial Deity and expect me to be their father!"
"AAhHaaHHhHhhhhhHhhHh~"
A baby Tiamat clung to my shoulder, her oversized horns poking my cheek. Her small form snuggling tightly in my hand
Across from her, Gaia looked at me smugly
You should take responsibility
"WHAT RESPONSIBILITY?!" I screamed
God damn it
Wait, Tiamat and Gaia are gods. Ugh
My mind raced with possibilities. There are many reasons my daughter could have chosen to have a child. However, i would not put it past her to do it simply because she wants to spite me when I said I would not make a good father
"AhhhHh~"
Tiamat nibbled on my cheek.
The Earth Mother Goddess and the Primordial Goddess of Life just ganged up on me. That's not fair. It's wrong. I'm not even their biological fathers. I'm just a normal human who came here from the 21st century. A young adult who barely knew anything about the franchise he's watching before he's forcefully dumped in one of them
I should have been the one calling them my parent, not the other way around
Seeing no other choice, I accepted the silent offer and wrapped my arms around Tiamat. The chibi deity blinked as I swept her off her feet, carrying her bridal style
"Does my little Goddess of Life wants to play with her Papa?" I whispered gently
Tiamat's eyes shone, and she nodded excitedly. A motion that made her horns came dangerously close to gouging my eye out
"Great. I heard the Sea of Life is pretty warm this time of the year" I smiled "Just let me pack my swimsuit and sunscreen, then we're set to go. Your boring mother's going to stay at home with her boring creations while we go and have some fucking fun!"
Father!
If you can't beat an enemy, join them
Rather than treating this travel back in time as a form of psychological torture, I should think of it as a vacation for the wellbeing of my psyche
<><><><><><><><>
Eons come and go, yet something never changes. Mankind found a way to master nature and cultivate their lifestyle. Seeing their need for guidance toward survival, the will of men, Alaya was formed. Right now she's nothing more than a speck of conceptual light hovering near me, but in time she'll change
Yet in spite of that, there were some changes. Some I found pleasant. Others...not so much. Sure, Gaia's become a mother now, and Tiamat as a concept matured into the milf goddess from the game. Human's built their first civilization and grew into a powerful community outside, which is all I've ever asked for
The only thing irking me is how I'm involved in the middle of it all
"No, Tiamat!"
The problem arises when Tiamat hit that age where she desires to be a mother
"You can't just create a bunch of Sumerian Deities and expect me to be their father!"
To be honest, I'm starting to see a pattern at work here
I'm just not sure what's causing it...but I sure as hell don't like it
The assorted children gazed innocently. Mentally, I took a roll call to count them. There's Inanna, Enki, Enlil, Dumuzid, Enki, Utu, Nammu and Ereshkigal. All powerful gods and goddesses of the Sumerian pantheon, the first religion of humanity.
I took in a deep breath as all those powerful god and goddess's eyes drawn toward me, like lost puppies looking at their owner. It was unnatural as in how these timeless beings could look so lost themselves when they are supposed to be the future guide of humanity
"Papa?"
I leveled a glare at Tiamat. The Goddess averted her eyes
"Gaia?"
She nodded
I turned toward them, the migrain halfway from reaching its zenith
"Alright. Listen here, technically I'm not your father-" I began but paused midway, hand rubbing my temple
How do I explain this to them in the simplest term possible? That I'm a normal individual who is just as bland and uninteresting as the rest of the subjeccts they're supposed to rule over?
"I'm just an average Magus- No, an average human who likes to do average things in my average life, and being a full-time non-average babysitter to a bunch of gods and goddesses is not my career of choice. So, if you'd only refer to me as Mr. (L/n) the average-"
It's like a mute explaining how deafness works to a blind with mental disability
"PAPA!" The entire first generation of Sumerian Gods all barreled toward me. Some are giggling, some are crying, others choose to marvel at my figure as I got buried underneath a mountain of noisy god-children, helpless toward their advance
With a sigh, I spread my arms and enveloped them all in a hug
Why?
Just...why?
Once the excited bunch had calmed down enough, I took to caring for them. Reluctantly, might I add, because in other circumstances i would not even bother myself with taking care of a child, let alone a horde of them
This is the last time I'm going to be a father. I decided. I'm not going to be impregnating every women I meet and form some sort of fucked up pantheon built from incest between my children
Fate can go suck a dick, and it better not be mine
<><><><><><><>
"Father! You've been ignoring me for several times now"
"Technically I'm not your father" I hummed "I'm just serving as a substitute until you are mature enough to start your own religion, which is to say a thousand years more. until then please refer to me as Uncle, Mr. (L/n), the Average Man, or the Babysitter from Hell. Whatever suits your fancy"
Ea glowed a ominous dark under my hand.
It's golden plates now replaced with a pitch black metallic outer shell. Crimson lines snaking upward in a spiral, intertwining with majestic engravings. Under the sunlight, the Noble Phantasm exudes a divine presence incomparable to anything else but the absolute authority of an evil god
Moments later, my Reinforcement worn out and the black sheen faded. In place of it the original blade lies, as though nothing just happened
'Good' I thought, lightly conking it 'A better mana output and change in conceptual mechanism will ensure signigificant increase in damage to reality, Now the only problem is how I would give it to Gilgamesh'
The new and improved weapon possess the operational capacity of about one hundred and fifty five times its original. With enough mana one could tear through about two and a half universes in one strike, and that is before the secondary effect kick in
It took a lot of effort not to make this thing more ovrpowered than it already is
I giggled, imagining the amount of destruction it would cause in the hand of the King of Heroes
"Argh- S-stop what you are doing right now and listen to what I say!"
Oh yeah
Let's play a game of "who's that Nasuverse character"
She has black hair. Red eyes. Is a deity of high position within the Sumerian pantheon. Her domain lies solely on the Heaven, in the aspect of love, beauty, sex, war, justice and political power. Her name has six characters, starts with an "I" and ends with an "r", and most importantly prone to throwing fits of
tantrum at the slightest sign of trouble encountered
Wait what?
Did somebody just say "Ishtar"?
Unbelievable. Impossible. Ridiculously improbable. You are correct
Ishtar, or as some of the earlier recoreds would call her Inanna. The Sumerian goddess who in history is a goddess of powerful disposition, a woman with an unquenchable passion for the opposite sex, and a wrathful deity with a short fuse, ready to unleash her anger on those she deem disrespectful. She's also the one who, in the Nasuverse, fused into a pseudo-Servant as one with my student and serve as a fundamental part in the Babylonia singularity
She's also the brattiest, haughtiest, most arrogant crybaby I've had the pleasure of raising.
(Eh, I can definitely see why she would be compatible with Rin)
I suppose it is a factor of parenthood. Canon Ishtar has Anu as her father, who is completely absent from this timeline as far as I've seen, to take care of her.
Yet he was nowhere to be found, and therefore a substitute was needed to keep the devil in check
So instead of him I was the one who spent time playing with Ishtar - teaching and raising her in general. Now I don't know if I'm qualified as a father because I've never had a legit child, so like usual...I just wing the entire process and hope for my luck to make the best of it
The result is unexpectedly satisfactory
Ishtar did end up being a decent enough child, just enough so that she resembles Rin Tohsaka rather than her Canon counterpart. Polite, but vicious toward anyone who earned her ire. A distant goddess whose only concern being her own entertainment
The downside, she ended up being completely attached to me. Not as in the level of lovers because that would be uncomfortable. Just...quite protective and threatening in face of something she deemed competitors to her
"Ishtar, I'm going to ignore you"
"Noooooooooooooo!" The mature woman whine, much like a child would when somebody burn down her doll house with gasoline, piss on the rest of her toys, and eat all of her saved up candies in one night
I, for the record, does not know how that would sound like and is just using that as a figure of speech
"-Unless you let go of my hair and get off from my back. Then perhaps we can have a proper conversation between father and daughter"
The grip on my hair lessened. The Goddess of Venus reluctantly stood before me as I straightened my back
"Now, does little Inanna have something to say to me?"
"Don't call me that. I'm an adult now"
"Not in my eyes, no" I shook my head "I still remember when I first crafted you the Boat of Heaven. It was done out of good will, yet you just have to go and rub it in Ereshkigal's face that I love you more than her. You remember what happened after that, I suppose?"
She winced
"That does not matter. I already apologized" Ishtar grumbled, sitting down. I followed suit "But, the reason why I am here is exactly that. It's about Ereshkigal"
"What about her?" Silence. My eyes softened. I leaned down "Speak, child. Whatever it is you have to say, I will not judge"
"Why must she be the one to be in charge of the Underworld?"
Ah
It has been one of the more vocal point of objection she's been bringing up to me these past few days
During the first reign, soon after Tiamat was created, there exists the Sea of Life. From it Gaia birthed her children. Deities, men, animals. Creation of mud given consciousness, left to roam the world to their free desires.
The goddess of life then was created as one to be in charge of doing the task. As she was the only one born directly from Gaia's womb, her authority from the Earth Mother Goddess ensures that she be assigned as the All-mother. One who takes care of all things and love them as she would her own children
However, as all things live, they must die
And when wind howls, and the first sign of death appears, the spirits are sent to rest in the same place they are born in. Yet as they are of the dead, the Sea rejected them
That place, nestling just above the Sea of Life, this become their nesting ground. Where souls and spirits of the deceased, the damned, and the cursed resides in, we call it the Underworld. A chilling dark space unknown to the light of the sun, where darkness birthed and died. It is in that same place that
Ereshkigal was tasked with the role of being its guardian
The Terrible Goddess, they took to calling her in fear of the thing her concepts represent. A goddess considered evil because of something she did out of duty
The sweet, bashful child who would always hid behind my shirt because she is incapable of talking to strangers
That same child, being called as terrible by the human
I wonder if humanity would like to receive a full-powered Excalibur to the face. Because somehow I really want to do it right now
"Eresh has always been a dutiful child" I recalled "Quite clingy just like her sister" I ignored Ishtar's sputterings "And always afraid to speak her mind when it comes to her feelings. I suppose she sees the attendance of the Underworld as something she has to do"
"Why? Why would she see it like that?"
A smile crossed my face. Such innocent concern for her sibling. Perhaps in Canon she would have been the same without me, but I can't help but feel proud of Ishtar for asking me this. It shows how the goddess is willing to understand things from Eresh's point of view without the arrogance that usually cloud her judgement
"Mostly because she felt no one else is willing to do the same. As I'd said, she is a dutiful child, yet that willingness to sacrifice oneself for another comes a surprisingly low self-esteem" I got back up "And perhaps, she always felt herself to be alone among the rest of her pantheon, despite an old man's insistence otherwise"
"You mean to tell me that old man is the only one who ever tried to talk to her" Ishar looked down, uncharacteristic guilt plaguing her feature
"Yes. Perhaps that old man doesn't feel satisfied with her decision" A pause "Otherwise, he would not have forced her to take one last trip to Heaven and have a heart to heart debate with her sister today"
The widening of her eyes is almost audible
"Wait, you mean-"
I smiled
"Come out, Ereshkigal"
There was a slight "eep" from behind the pillar. A mop of blonde hair appeared, followed by startlingly similar red eyes that mirrored Ishtar's shocked expression
"F-father"
"That's Mr (L/n) to you" I rolled my eyes "Seriously, I didn't even put my dick inside a single woman and already have to suffer the pain of parenthood. Where is the equivalent exchange in that?"
It was not easy convinccing her to go out of the Underworld to meet her sister. The problem with these two is that for supposed sisters, they are complete opposites
Ishtar is straightforward and blunt. Eresh is not. To pull her out of her place is like pulling an Otaku out of his holes containing his favorite animes and mangas
My hand settled on the Underworld ruler's hair and ruffled it "You go and talk with your sister. I'll go outside for a moment"
"W-wait. At least tell us where you're going!"
"Don't know. I'll just buy myself some milk probably"
As I left the goddesses to their own device, a frown appeared on my face
"Should history be altered?" I mused "The wheel of time can be spun infinitely in in one direction. Yet a change of direction could cause countless deviations in its trail"
Here I am, at the start of time
The mother of the Earth Gaia had deeply fallen into slumber, while Tiamat's corpse will be torn in half to make the heaven
Right now, I have the ability to change the course of human history as much as I want. I can play God - literally - with zero consequences given. Using the limited authority I have creating a different timeline to contain all this changes is just a simple case of blowing the whistle
The Quantum Lock effect? They can be nullified with enough effort. Once they did, I am fully capable of turning the same World into an illusory one, where nobody had to suffer. Where heroes does not have to suffer tragedies, where everyone can simply be happy
But that...would be quite superficious
A world that is as close to becoming a utopia as possible. It would be the most boring, stagnant world one have the displeasure of seeing
Indeed. In the end, a real world is always better than a fake one because it is what invalidate its existence
So...should I let the Gods revolt and rip Tiamat's body in half, thus forming the existence of Heaven and Earth?
Should I betray the deity's trust and aid Gilgamesh in ending the Age of Gods, thus beginning a new era where human can thrive to their full potential?
Choices. Choices. To betray one's trust for the goodness of the many, or to be against the world to protect them, isn't this the same dilemma with a certain
Emiya?
...
Well, unlike him, I do have the power to make myself an alternative
<><><><><><><><>
Turns out an average guy can still be a god if there's enough idiots out there who believes his bullshit
When the all the Sumerian gods took to calling this person as "father", "great father", "esteemed father", "papa", or "daddy", misconceptions tends to be made, and legends of absurd degrees sprung up everywhere concerning my identity
The ancient Assyrian pulls no brake in displaying their worships of me
"WHAT THE FUCK IS THHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSS!???????????"
Contrary to popular belief, I would have been fine with being considered a deity.
Why? Partly because it's an entire pantheon I belong to, so even if I were to somehow get in the spotlight my status as average would remain. Partly because I've already gotten used to the presence of gods, thus can understand it's just a mere title and nothing else
Divine Spirit are sympathetic in nature, even the case for malevolent ones
But they lack that sparks of empathy needed for understanding the heart of human
Case being: Ereshkigal. Even being one of the most level-headed among her peers and a sweet girl to her father, the girl is someone with a no-bullshit attitude when it comes to handling of the Underworld
She is someone who takes care of her garden of dead souls seriously, even referring to them as her 'precious flowers'. Unknowingly, this is the same reason why the people - both living and dead- fears her
Because they could not comprehend what went inside such a powerful being's mind. What makes them scared. What makes them angry. What makes them human. But then again, fear of the unknown has always been a prominent point of mortality
It is those are able to overcome that fear that become legends in their own right
But such is not the case here. Even while I do not mind being an object of worship, what I do mind is the aspects that has been branded to me from the start
Paternity. Maternity. Eternity. Infinity. Luck. But most importantly, Marriage
How could this led to something so outrageous I have to yell in despair? The fact is that those who praise me are the same kind of people who suggest Gilgamesh having annual sex with Ishtar in an effort to increase their harvested crop
The rituals they come up with can often be bizarre in nature
"Oh my god not again!"
I am expected to grant blessings to couples who are either married or about to be married, in order to ensure a happy love life between them and their significant other
....By having both of them pray to me as they have sex for the first time
By some divine miracle, just the invocation of my name is enough for their voices to reach me from afar. I finally know how deities can respond to their subject's wish, but now I am forced to the same state as them
Ancient Babylonians sure are fucked up
"Father, I have come to receive your blessing"
At least when Gilgamesh is born, everything would be better
(Y/n) (L/n) stated with absolute confidence in his luck

Author's Note: I don't think I did well with this chapter but, ah, fuck it
By the way I missed the chance to watch Heaven's Feel here in Vietnam. Big Sad :(
