Shortly after invading the city of Baghdad with his army and brutally vanquishing a secret rebellion led by Mukhtar, a spiritual leader and revolutionary, Jafar is informed by Shah Jinn and his sorceress aide Badi about a prospect which can greatly assist him in achieving his seemingly overwhelming objective. Jafar must convince a princess belonging to a peaceful kingdom of fairies to marry him of her own volition in order to gain complete authority and control over the inhabitants of both realms. Immediately, he decides to interrupt the birthday celebration of the beautiful princess Yasmeen and take her away from her kingdom to imprison her in his palace full of grim spells preventing her from escaping back to her home. As the princess begins to develop feelings of despair and anguish, hope appears in the form of a notorious thief known only throughout the city as the 'Thief of Baghdad', a sly and artful hero who steals from the rich to help the poor and oppressed.

Thestory is loosely borrowed from Douglas Fairbanks Sr.'s "The Thief ofBagdad" (1924), itself a great film. Fairbanks Jr. told me it was hisfather's favorite. One major change is crucial: In the silent film, the thiefand the romantic lead were one and the same, played by Fairbanks. In the 1940film, they are made into two characters. The thief, Abu, is played by theIndian child star Sabu, then about 15. The king, Ahmad, is played by JohnJustin with a Fairbanksian mustache. This is an invaluable change, for bothdramatic purposes and practical ones: The silent character needs no one to talkto. The 1940 characters become allies drawn from the top and bottom of society,making Sabu essentially the star of the film, although he doesn't receive topbilling. The most compelling character, as he should be, is the villain Jaffar,played by the German emigre Conrad Veidt with hypnotic eyes and a cruel laugh.The beautiful, passive heroine, a princess desired by both men, is played byJune Duprez.

Theuse of blue screen may seem primitive compared to today's computer-generatedanimation, but it has the advantage of using real-world subjects. The flyinghorse, for example, is a real horse, with a real actor mounted on it. Theflying carpet is a real carpet, with Abu standing on it. There has been great romanticism in films, too'"in some of the great love stories and adventure stories of the '30s and '40s, but no less in fantasies, a delight to children and adults alike, in such early films of magic and enchantment as The Thief of Baghdad. The most recent attempt in this genre, ARABIAN ADVENTURES, shares only the outer shell of such earlier films and totally fails to communicate any of the romantic spirit of adventure and derring-do and triumph-over-difficulties that characterize its illustrious predecessors. Instead of one soaring magic carpet of The Thief of Baghdad, we now have dozens of flying carpets, but no feeling of magic. Instead of the benevolent giant imprisoned in the bottle, we have a misshapen ogre. Instead of Conrad Veidt's inimitable portrayal of the elegantly malevolent embodiment of evil, we have the tight-lipped cursings of a popinjay monarch who does nothing but invoke magic. And instead of Sabu we have a new Indian youngster who smiles emptily at the camera. Instead of one clear and highly dramatic plot line, we have a series of episodes, none of which mean much because the characters are all papier-mch. The writing is such a stock of clichs as to lead one to believe the writers must have gotten the script out of an anthology of dead expressions.
