Tradition
Tradition in the Sixth Lunar Month (May): Boon Bang Fai (Rocket Festival)
The Boon Bang Fai Festival is held during the rice farming season as an offering to Phaya Thaen (the Rain God, often associated with Indra) to ask for rain to fall at the right time. The tradition originates from the local folktale of Phadaeng Nang Ai.
On the first day of the festival, there is a vibrant parade featuring elaborately decorated floats, traditional music, local dancers (known as nang lam), and performers dressed as celestial beings. On the second day, large homemade rockets (bang fai) are launched into the sky to symbolically request rain for the upcoming planting season.
