My wife introduced me to Ashnikko. Apparently she had a song go viral on Tiktok or something. I literally had no idea who she was when Victoria bought us tickets back in 20234. I started listening to her music in preparation for the concert and fell in love with the entire discography. I really enjoy just how angry, in your face, and queer a lot of the songs were. So when she announced her tour for the new Smoochie Girl album, we naturally bought tickets right away.
And this is where I confess that, I was not a fan of this album. This sophomore album was so, tame. Which makes sense. A lot of the songs are much more introspective for Ashnikko and less about a reaction to the world around her.
Maybe I just haven't listened to the album enough and I'm not saying there aren't songs on the albums I like. But none of them are grabbing me by the throat and taking over my headphones like previous albums/EPs. idk it just wasn't clicking more me. But checking out the set list, I saw some songs I enjoyed so I was still excited to go.
My wife ended up being sick and decided that she didn't want to go so I ended up going with roomie.
Royal and Serpent was the opener, which I only really know "Overwhelmed." She had been an opener for Fall Out Boy at another concert I had attended some years ago. I don't think her music translates well to live performance, its definitely way more enjoyable on your headphones.
Some of my favorite songs were on the set list:
Work Bitch
Toxic
Invitation
Manners
You Make Me Sick
Stupid
Tantrum
Weedkiller
Possession of a Weapon
But I started realizing that for a lot of these older songs, she was only playing short snippets of the songs strung together in a medley and not the whole thing. Some of these songs are only 2 minutes long! It was just such a let down.
t was late and a work night for both of us so we ended up leaving early. I almost wished I had just stayed home with my wife. It really sucks when you buy tickets to something and you end up not enjoying yourself, but I don't really blame the artist or the set list or anything like that Sometimes you and the vibe just aren't melding well.Â
