About Me
My name is Zach Krauss. I am the Chief Meteorologist & Owner of SWCT/NY Weather LLC, a hyperlocal weather consulting service in NY & CT. I am also a passionate educator. I received my Bachelor's in meteorology, climate change, and applied economics from Cornell University in December 2019. At Cornell, I was the Education & Outreach Chair for the Cornell Chapter of the American Meteorological Society for which I developed demonstrations and lessons for use at local schools, science centers, and museums. I also led field trips to Cornell's campus and weather station. I was chosen to present my innovative science education approach at a national weather education conference. I am now pursuing my Master's in Environmental Management at Millersville University while working on a National Science Foundation project called WATERS to develop Watershed Sustainability Curricula for middle schools around the country. Over the past few years I have also worked as a substitute teacher and a summer camp counselor and supervisor.
Services
School Visits: The Weather Wizard offers a variety of school visit interactive programs focused on weather phenomena, tornado formation, tornado safety, the meteorology industry, climate change, sustainability, etc. All programs feature my famous cloud suit and towering tornado machine! I have written papers on how to teach climate change at an elementary level as I believe this is one of the most important but challenging aspects to addressing climate change. New Jersey has become the first state in the nation to mandate climate change education in all grades K-12. Let me help you fulfill that requirement.
Optional individual class visits can follow programs and feature hands-on activities such as creating a tornado in a bottle (elementary level) or using algebra to forecast the weather (high school level)!
Birthday Parties: Is your son or daughter a young aspiring scientist or a "weather weenie", as we call it in the industry? Let me put on the best birthday party they could imagine! I will bring my 6 ft tall tornado machine and use it to teach the kids about tornado formation and other weather phenomena. Every attendee will make their own tornado in a bottle that they can take home. We will play weather games and crown one party-goer the Weather Wizard Apprentice, donning them with their very own wizard hat. This is a perfect combination of science, fun, and education for grades K-6. Birthday party presentations last about 75-90 minutes. (The Weather Wizard will be donned in his stylish weather face covering for safety.)

I will use my extra large tornado machine for a demonstration that explains each ingredient needed for tornado formation. Students will be able to get up close and personal with the tornado! Virtual demonstrations are also available. This is a particularly good option for an Earth Science class studying weather. The demonstration will be pared with an activity comparing and contrasting hurricanes and tornadoes and further learning about tornado formation.
