In collaboration with KoKo NYC - an art-based science and engineering program for kids - our project focuses on biochar - the carbon-sequestering byproduct of pyrolysis - as a means of connecting waste management, climate change mitigation, water- and soil remediation, at a localized urban level. The goal is to have kids (and adults!) see “trash” as an opportunity to enrich the environment and to better understand what happens to the things that go in the bin.
KoKo NYC is the education program of Open Source Gallery, a non-profit arts organization based in Brooklyn. KoKo NYC serves over 1,000 children annually through programs in NYC schools, the Brooklyn Public Library and the CAMBA Flagstone Family Center (a family shelter in Brownsville, Brooklyn). KoKo NYC provides art-based science and engineering classes in school and after-school programs throughout New York City. We also offer annual Soap Box Summer Workshops and after-school programs such as Boat Building and Inventor’s Lab at our workshop site in Brooklyn.
We are Dilly Dally Projects; a group of architects/designers who are creating a living learning lab focused on education and experimentation with biochar and its usefulness to urban communities. Our lab will establish a generative environment where youth, community, scientists, makers, and creatives can exchange ideas, explore, and experiment to develop carbon negative practices tailored to the urban environment.
Dilly Dally Projects is a collaborative whose members’ backgrounds range from art, architecture and construction, but whose design interests are rooted in understanding a material’s full life cycle - what things are made of, where they come from, and how they could be granted a second life after use.
