Looking for a free domain to test your projects or build a personal site? ClouDNS offers permanent free subdomains that you can fully manage through CloudFlare's powerful DNS system. This guide walks you through the entire process—from registration to DNS configuration—so you can get your free domain up and running in about 15 minutes.
Free domains from ClouDNS give you a legitimate web address without spending a dime. They're perfect for development environments, personal blogs, or testing new applications. You get two suffix options (.biz.cloudns and .org.cloudns), and once you've claimed your subdomain, it's yours to keep.
The real advantage comes when you pair this free domain with CloudFlare. CloudFlare's DNS infrastructure is faster and more reliable than most basic hosting providers, plus you get access to their security features and analytics tools—all on the free tier.
First, head over to 👉 ClouDNS and create your free account to claim your permanent subdomain. The registration process is straightforward—just fill in your basic information and verify your email.
Once you're logged in, the dashboard will guide you through a quick setup wizard. Keep clicking "Next" until you reach the zone selection page. Here's where you make your first important choice: select the Free Zone option at the bottom of the list.
On the next screen, you'll see two suffix options:
yourdomain.biz.cloudns.org
yourdomain.org.cloudns.org
Pick whichever suffix you prefer, then type in your desired subdomain name in the text field. Something memorable works best—think of it like choosing a username. Once you're happy with your choice, hit the "Create" button and your free domain is registered.
Now that you have a ClouDNS domain, it's time to hook it up to CloudFlare for better performance and features. Log into your CloudFlare account (or create one if you haven't already) and look for the "Add Site" or "Add Domain" button in the dashboard.
Enter your full ClouDNS domain exactly as you registered it (including the .biz.cloudns.org or .org.cloudns.org part). CloudFlare will ask you to choose a plan—select the Free option and continue through the setup.
CloudFlare will now scan your domain and may show some existing DNS records. Don't worry about these for now—we'll handle the DNS configuration in the next step.
This is the crucial part where you actually connect ClouDNS to CloudFlare. CloudFlare will provide you with two nameserver addresses that look something like:
frank.ns.cloudflare.com
miki.ns.cloudflare.com
(Your actual nameserver addresses might be different—use whatever CloudFlare shows you.)
Go back to your ClouDNS dashboard and find your newly created domain in the domain list. Click on it to open the DNS settings page. You'll see some default DNS records already there—delete all of them. We're starting fresh with 👉 CloudFlare's nameservers for faster DNS resolution.
Now add two new NS (nameserver) records:
First NS Record:
Type: NS
Host: @ (or leave blank)
Value: frank.ns.cloudflare.com
Second NS Record:
Type: NS
Host: @ (or leave blank)
Value: miki.ns.cloudflare.com
After adding both records, click the "Update" button at the top of the ClouDNS page to save your changes.
Here's where patience comes in. Head back to CloudFlare and click "Done, check nameservers" or whatever confirmation button they show. CloudFlare will now verify that your ClouDNS domain is pointing to their nameservers.
This verification usually takes about 10 minutes, though it can occasionally take up to 24 hours. CloudFlare will send you an email once the domain is active on their network. You can also check the status directly in your CloudFlare dashboard—it'll show "Active" next to your domain once everything is working.
Once your domain is active on CloudFlare, you've got full control over DNS records. You can point your free domain to any web server, set up email forwarding, create subdomains, or configure it for specific services. The CloudFlare dashboard makes it easy to add A records, CNAME records, or whatever else your project needs.
Your ClouDNS free domain is now fully managed through CloudFlare's infrastructure, giving you reliable DNS resolution and the option to use CloudFlare's other features like SSL certificates, caching, and DDoS protection—all without paying for domain registration.
