Throughout my time in NYU I have been able to figure out what I want to do with my career. When I first came to NYU, I was a computer science major and thought that I wanted to be a software engineer but after taking my first class on coding, I knew that it was not for me. So, I transferred to BTM. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do, but I knew that I didn’t want to work in finance. Exploring options outside the world of finance I found a summer marketing internship at the Hinton Group, a black run marketing firm, which helps black owned businesses and black artists with their social media presence. Working at Hinton Group taught me how to carry myself in the professional world and further clarified my skills and abilities.
Working in a company run by black people for black people was a particularly rewarding experience. At NYU I’m often the only black person in class, seeing what we can do as a community and a people in the professional world was inspiring. Now when I am the only person of color in class I feel as though it's an advantage. I have a unique perspective that nobody else brings to the table. It allows me to look at situations differently and empowers me to speak up. This empowerment carries over to all aspects of my life now not just academic and professional but also socially.
