Mini Project! Create an Infographic using Canva.com about ways humans can live sustainably
Each project will include three components: a research component, an invention, and a "Shark Tank" presentation component. Students have 3-4 weeks to complete a presentation-quality project for our Inquiry Learning Fair.
STEP ONE
1.) Students will first choose an environmental problem that engages their curiosity and requires a solution. Click on each of the buttons to see the top environmental issues of 2023 and 2024 to choose a topic that matters to you.
Some examples of possible inquiry questions to lead your research: Your question should lead you towards an invention that could solve the problem
Could humans have stopped global warming a decade ago?
How do climate change policies affect human rights?
How does transportation affect climate change?
How does climate change affect the ocean life in coral reefs?
How are extreme weather events connected to climate change?
How does climate change affects the life of an individual in B.C.?
What are possible strategies for addressing the effects of climate change?
What renewable energy sources could we be using?
How will the common effects and/causes of climate change affect people?
How could we preventing climate change by protecting forests?
How does climate change threaten natural biodiversity?
How does a human's daily activities effect the environment?
How does ocean acidification affect the world’s habitat?
How has climate change affected the food chain?
How can packaging either be avoided or redesigned to the solve plastic pollution problem?
What can we learn from Indigenous people about living sustainably?
What inventions could we use to combat climate change?
How is (a particular animal) affected by climate change, what could we do to protect it?
How could we redesign cities and towns to be sustainable places to live?
How could we redesign household appliances to be more sustainable?
While each Inquiry project option is different, they all seek to answer one big question:
"How can people show compassion for Earth and it's climate?"
Your job will be to answer this question through your Inquiry project and your reflection at the end of the unit. As you research the climate change problem in which you are interested, you need to use your creativity and critical thinking to come up with an invention to solve this problem.
Your invention could be technology-related, education-based, a product, a law change, a new way of building something, a new design, etc. Students have come up with everything from eco-friendly bricks for house construction to sprinkler systems for forest fires. The world is your oyster!
Choose a Climate Change problem that ignites your curiosity. Research it well, become an expert.
How can you use your creativity and innovation to invent a solution to the climate change problem? You can invent a product, a structure, laws, new communities, education, etc.
Present your invention to potential investors with confidence. Can you convince them to invest in your idea?
Build questions about an environmental problem
Find answers to your questions using different sources
Record your sources of information and answers
You should feel like an expert on the environmental problem
Research what inventions have been done in the past
What has worked? What hasn't worked?
What improvements could you make?
How will you make it?
What materials do you need?
You should be ready to bring your materials into class to build. Build your model, make it look professional and tidy.
Write a script for your Shark Tank pitch
Know your market - who are you selling to?
Make a professional background or slideshow with canva.com or Powerpoint
Practice your presentation/pitch
You should feel like you can do your presentation without reading off your script, with confidence, and expression!
Support to plan your Inquiry project and meet due dates.
How will you collect evidence? Mind map, key notes, audio-record, highlight, etc.
Goals:
Finish any last bits of research
Begin creating your project for the learning fair.
Goals:
Put all necessary information, detail, and design into project
Finishing details and publishing - making the project look fantastic for the Fair
Practice "Shark Tank" Presentations - how will you convince investors that your invention is worth their investment?
