In the BC curriculum, over and over again, the theme of curiosity and questioning arises. It is a key competency in Science, Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, Art, Applied Designs and Skills, and Careers. Asking good questions is a skill that is essential for all students.
Big questions help us to explore from a place of curiosity and wonder, and takes us away from memorization of facts. They allow children to explore a wide range of concepts, skills, and ideas.
From good questions come stronger research skills, better data collection, more curiosity, more exploration, more experimentation, more problem-solving, and more risk-taking.
Every unit uses a big question to help students bring their focus back to the big ideas behind the curriculum and their learning. Within each unit, there is a weekly focus question for students to explore that relates to the big question for the unit.
